On this form, Joe Elliott's position as Mott The Hoople's global cultural ambassador will never be challenged.

When Def Leppard's Joe Elliott formed the Down 'N' Outz his sole mission was to give the music related to Mott The Hoople (and their spin off acts) some proper exposure. With help from The Quireboys trio of Paul Guerin (guitars), Keith Weir (keyboards) and Guy Griffin (guitars) as well as Wayward Sons' Phil Martini (drums) and Vixen's Share Ross (bass), Down 'N' Outz amassed two studio albums of lesser spotted gems by Mott The Hoople, Mott, British Lions and Ian Hunter's solo career.

With a support slot in 2011 on Paul Rodgers' UK tour, it was inevitable that a headline tour would eventually materialise, and that came to fruition in 2014 on the back of their second album 'The Further Adventures Of....'. I was at the final date in Dublin, and as enjoyable as it was, poor Elliott was suffering with a horrendously bad sore throat, which sounded like it took its toll, particularly in the latter stages of the show. Thankfully, the tapes were running a week earlier at the Corporation, in Elliott's hometown of Sheffield, to give you 'The Further Live Adventures Of ...'.

Before the Hoople banquet begins, eleven minutes of sheer genius ensues with a spellbinding rendition of Elton John's 'Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding' featuring some rather nifty ivory tickling from the main man – a talent many may not know he possessed. Then it's down to business as Elliott slips on the Gibson for a silky 'One More Chance To Run', a 1978 jewel by the short-lived British Lions, that's given full justice here. A hat-trick of 'Rock And Roll Queen', 'Drivin' Sister' and 'Whizz Kid' will bring delight to the faces of Hoople fans, before the Mott and Hunter one-two of 'Storm' and 'Overnight Angels' positively gleam with good time seventies Rock.

It has to be said, picking the set-list must've been an even mix of pain and pleasure for Elliott, the Yorkshire man has had these songs pumping through his veins since he was a whippersnapper, but boy he chose well! The gripping 'Sea Diver' is probably one of the most overlooked ballads in the history of music, and believe me, this take will confirm that. The closing two tracks, 'England Rocks' and 'Good Times', bring the curtain down in triumphant style.

On this form, Elliott's position as Mott The Hoople's global cultural ambassador will never be challenged.
