The band clearly have the talent and are very passionate about their music.

'Redemption' is the debut album from Italian female-fronted Prog Metallers Hidden Lapse who first formed in 2011. As with Prog albums of old, all the tracks assemble to make a musical story that takes in subjects including crime, heartbreak, sacrifice and abuse.

Like all good stories, this one starts with a prologue. 'Dead Woman Walking' is a purely instrumental Techno-sounding piece that's heavily reliant on atmospheric synth padding, echoes and a fast, steam train-like drum beat which then gives way to Marco Ricco's pounding Metal guitar in 'Silent Sacrifice'. Here we are first exposed to Alessia Marchigiani's upper-mid range vocal, which adds a smooth coating over the edgy stop-start riffing. Rather soon in proceedings we have an interlude with more keyboard-based pleasantry in 'The Right To Remain Silent'.

The first track which brings this band together into a coherent composition is 'Drop' a track that carries melody, great riffing rhythms and complimentary synth work whilst still maintaining a fast pace. 'Lucid Nightmare' has a good tune to it and there's some great playing here, but somehow the vocal sits uneasily over the top of it all, sounding much like an afterthought. After this minor blip, 'Pure' brings us back to the polished, Symphonic sound which Hidden Lapse do so well. The production is crisp, some may say basic, but this allows all parts room to breathe and not bleed over onto other instruments, as is so often the case.

The highlight of the album is 'Redemption', an offering that brings Melodic Metal, Prog and Symphonic Rock together in a speedy but well assembled track. Another instrumental interlude follows before 'Compassion' weaves its spell. Marchigiani's on top form here as the powerful purity of her voice cuts through. There's multi-riffing aplenty against a keyboard background that gives her vocal a wonderful canvas to project onto before it everything blends into the breakneck 'Awareness'. All too quickly its time for the epilogue 'Mercy Upon Your Soul' which takes the flavour of each track and moulds them into an album closing instrumental.

The instrumentals were possibly unnecessary, but the band clearly have the talent and are very passionate about their music. They should be justly proud of being able to take a heavier and faster genre and build it into a Progressive soundscape where both paths merge into a unique sound. I'm sure there will be no 'Hidden Lapse' in their future!
