These tracks are involving, enervating and exciting enough to make you smile, bang your head and order their last two releases.

Sweden's Lancer is causing a small splash. After meeting at an academy of music, they have produced two well-received albums; in a small way, they are on their way. They might be defined as Power Metal but they are cleverer than that, this seventies Hard Rock loving band is a melting pot of influences. Not a big pot, you wouldn't need a big fire, but there are some extras here which make this a much tastier repast.

The music on offer is self-important alright, rushing out of the blocks with a Battle Metal vibe, 'Dead Raising Towers' excites but then 'Mastery' opens out for a bit of accessible power in the way that Angra and Firewind hook their fans. 'Victims Of The Nile' is nothing less than Iron Maiden type Proggy construction – slowly unfolding, galloping, a doubled solo, it really works a long, dramatic piece – while 'Freedom Eaters' is what Symphonic fans need, with its machine-gun drums, choirs and pell-mell rushing. The band can also do some something like 'Widowmaker' with its simple, rough appeal.

This band lock together like fine laminate flooring, Isak Stenvall does all the dramatic vocal stuff, the solos are overwrought, Per-Owe "Ewo" Solvelius and Fredrik Keleman possess flying fingers and Emil Öberg and Sebastian Pedermera lock it all down with real style. The mix is crunchy, with bits sticking out, apparently with no over-dubs, not smooth but a bag of mystery.

There is nothing here to make you scream "this is my favourite band" or even "these could give Gus G and the boys a run for their money", but in a few years there might be. In the meantime, these tracks are involving, enervating and exciting enough to make you smile, bang your head and order their last two releases. Just not at the same time.
