It's about time Robin Beck was back up there in the melodic hard rock firmament. Wonderful!

Robin Beck's debut album'Trouble Or Nothing' was the soundtrackof my life back in 1989. Catapulted to overnight recognition (if not fame & fortune)thanks to that Coca-Cola backed single, 'First Time' was actually something of a misdirection as the remainder of the album, produced by hit-generator Desmon Child, contained track after track of glorious, bombastic melodic rock. The 80s rarely sounded better than this cocktail of brashness and sex-appeal, all generously coated in Ms Beck's sultry, yet powerfully determined gritty vocals.

I must admit to not getting hold of any of her following three albums, and it wasn't until her glorious hard-rock comeback for Frontiers in 2005, 'Do You Miss Me', that we got happily reacquainted. 'Living On A Dream' followed in 2007, following pretty much the same path, and although speckled with the greatness seen on her debut, those albums never really had a lasting impact on me.

Which brings me to 2011's new release, 'The Great Escape', on which Robin has joined forces with husband and House of Lords mainman James Christian and Sweden's Tommy Denander to create a superlative collection of songs that can proudly stand shoulder to shoulder with her stunning debut. Opener 'The One' sets the scene, and the standard … Robin's emotive vocals accompanied by a solitary keyboard, then that throaty scream before the drums and music kick in, enormously catchy with an infuriatingly familiar guitar line. Elsewhere we have the incredibly infectious, modern pop/rock of 'Cross My Heart' and, in quite a departure from her usual sound, the Motley Crue 'Dr Feelgood' flavoured 'Got Me Feelin' Sexy'.

Actually, the variety on offer here is one of the album's strengths, whether it's the typically massive, passion-filled ballads such as 'Don't Think He's Ever Coming Home', where Robin's emotions bleed from the speakers, the wonderful Eric Bazilian/Amanda Marshall flavoured 'Baby I'm Not A Bitch' with it's wonderfully insightful lyrics, or the "Vixen in full-blooded glory" taste of 'That All Depends' where our gal duets masterfully with Joe Lynn Turner. The album closer 'End Of Times' is another great duet, this time with husband James Christian, who along with Tommy Denander is responsible for the powerfully clear mix throughout this CD.

It has to be said that Beck has come up with a sure-fire winning team, with Denander's delightful guitar lifting the songs to another level. If I was to be churlish, I'd question the song running-order, but there has already been a massive amount of positive vibes regarding this release, and after taking the brave step of releasing the album on her own label, it's about time Robin Beck was back up there in the melodic hard rock firmament. This CD has not been out of my car CD player in four months, and is played constantly without ever getting boring. You can't ask for better than that. Wonderful.
