The Dead Daisies are well and truly on fire and continue to make some noise.

'Burn It Down' is the incendiary fourth album by The Dead Daisies, the band originally formed back in 2012 by Australian guitarist David Lowy and New Zealand singer Jon Stevens. They have had several line-up changes over their six-year existence (including the departure of Stevens), but fortunately, there has been only one change since 2016's 'Make Some Noise' opus with drummer Brain Tichy being replaced by Revolution Saints' (ex-Bad English, ex-Journey) sticks-man Deen Castronovo. The tag super-group is often over-used, however, if you look at the pedigree of Castronovo along with the history and experience of the other remaining members � guitarist Doug Aldrich (ex-Whitesnake, ex-Dio), singer John Corabi (ex-M�tley Cr�e, ex-The Scream), bassist Marco Mendoza (ex-Whitesnake, ex-Thin Lizzy) and guitarist Lowy � then you realise the description could have been invented for The Dead Daisies.

The previous album was one of the best sounding albums of recent years and I am happy to report that the production has once again been handled by Marti Frederiksen with mixing by Anthony Focx and mastering by Howie Weinberg. The songs are big, ballsy, bombastic and bluesy; everything you come to expect from a Dead Daisies album. They have hit on a winning formula and have decided, wisely in my opinion, not to mess with it.

As with all their previous releases, they kick off with a statement of intent by virtue of 'Resurrected'; it's in-your-face and sounds like the end result of a head-on collision between Aerosmith and Velvet Revolver. I might not rank any of their songs as bona fide classics (just yet), however, they have an inane ability to earworm their way into your brain, none more so than the epic title-track with its mammoth riff that is underpinned by smouldering Blues.

The musicianship, as expected, is first-class with particular note to Aldrich who is all over this recording. 'Rise Up', 'Judgement Day', 'What Goes Around' and 'Can't Take It With You' all have riffs as large as tectonic plates. A Dead Daisies album would not be complete without a cover version and this time it's The Rolling Stones' 'Bitch' that's given the over-the-top treatment. The tempo steps down with the ballad 'Set Me Free', but the album finishes with a flourish via 'Dead And Gone', 'Can't Take It With You' and 'Leave Me Alone', the latter sure to be a live favourite.

The Dead Daisies are well and truly on fire and continue to make some noise!

  • SeaDog57 : just an observation. I just got Issue 89 at the Bookstore and when i looked at the spine of the magazine it says "Fireworks Issue 85 Winter Jan - Mar 2019" Was this a misprint? The rest of the Magazine is Issue 89. Was just wondering did anyone else notice this?
