An inspired debut album and one that should carry them far within the Metal community.

Formed in Brugg, Switzerland in 2015 by guitarist Romana Kalkuhl, with the intention of putting together an all-female line-up of Metal musicians to take on the world, this is the debut release from Burning Witches.

It could be 1985 all over again listening to the music contained here. 'Black Widow' comes racing out the garage amongst a blur of razor sharp guitars and double-kick bass drums, and singer Seraina Telli has a beast of a voice, part Udo Dirkschneider (ex-Accept), part Coburn Pharr (ex-Annihilator). The music during 'Burning Witches' is influenced by Iron Maiden where twin guitars drive the song's heroic theme along relentlessly, and despite being soaked in old-school Metal traits, the music still sounds fresh.

Some of the songs seem to border on parody, with 'Metal Demons' and 'Creatures Of the Night' being prime examples, although they are executed with Metal precision and certainly have their charms. It's during the slower moments that the band reveals its strengths; the soaring Power Metal ballad 'Save Me' showcases Telli's soaring vocal talents, and the guitars entwine to a euphoric climax of solos. 'Dark Companion' harks back to the early days of Dio and the Thrash Metal genre.

It's all too easy for Burning Witches to churn out furious Speed Metal, something they seem to do effortlessly, however too many songs in this style give the album a somewhat predictable sound. 'Creator Of Hell' and 'The Deathlist' are typical examples of this. The band scream out 'We Eat Your Children', and this song features dynamic Metal showmanship with an influence of classic era Judas Priest. This leads nicely into the cover of Priest's 'Jawbreaker' to close, an inspired version that retains all musical force of the original.

Burning Witches have delivered an inspired debut album and one that should carry them far within the Metal community.
