This is a splendid album.

Todd Michael Hall may be familiar to many of you as the lead singer of various Rock or Metal bands like Harlet, Jack Starr's Burning Starr, Reverence and Riot V, but for his debut solo album, 'Letters From India', he's adopted a rather different sound that at different times puts me in mind of Richard Marx with hints of Jude Cole, Jimmy Davis & Junction, Terry Brock and Venice.

The album title alludes to the fact that Hall found his wife and the love of his life as a result of them being pen friends with many of the songs being based around their correspondence.

Some may find the religious lyrics, when they occur, a little too overt for their taste, but I urge you to overlook that if you're not a believer and listen to the tunes because they are splendid, while his vocals are delightful.

'Whole Again' has a touch of Country to it, as do a number of the songs, not least the somewhat cheesy lyrics; I'll forgive that as the chorus is wonderful. 'The Best I Can' opens the album and is a lovely piano-based song as is 'Never Let Go' which is Soft Rock perfection; I can imagine lighters in the air as I listen.

'Ordinary People' lifts the tempo and makes me think of a Cole/Venice hybrid; again, both the vocal arrangement and chorus are top notch. 'We Only Have Today' has some lovely acoustic guitar work and at this point I'm thinking that pre-Grunge, when AOR was in its pomp and ascendance, this album would have been huge.

'Kathmandu' seems immediately familiar in a Marx style, the vocal delivery differs on the verses to the bridge/chorus which works so well. Once more the chorus is terrific. 'Open My Eyes' is a plaintive number, stripped back to piano and voice which seems to be the model for the worship material. This style is retained for 'If Today Were My Last Day' albeit with a subtle string arrangement.

Choruses are clearly a forte of Hall's as 'Never Be The Same' has one that's addictive, while 'Free' is one of the rockier songs with its staccato chorus. For me, it would have made a better closing song, I get Todd Michael Hall's emotional desire to finish with 'From The Father', but it's a ballad and therefore feels anticlimactic. That aside, this is a splendid album.
