Sadly, the light female vocals slow down the rough music that Talvienkeli tries to deliver.

Talvienkeli is a French Symphonic Metal band that hails from Lyon. Formed in 2012, they released an EP in 2014 ('Blooming') and in 2016 signed with Wormholedeath Records to release their 2017 full-length debut 'Hybris'.

Playing a self-described Progressive Symphonic Metal, the band claims to be inspired by acts like Nightwish, Epica, Behemoth and Five Finger Death Punch. Indeed, going through the ten song album clearly reveals the influence of at least Epica... maybe a little too much. However, the voice of the lead singer Camille Borrelly does not bring any novelty and appears (to my ears at least) to be weaker than that of Simone Simons. It is always rather risky to play a comparable kind of music to that of more experienced and established bands, and in my opinion, Talvienkeli fail to meet the challenge of being inspired without copying.

However, some songs like 'Immortal', 'Atlas' and 'Scream-Her' are worth listening to and merit being highlighted, while closer 'Hybris – Part 1: Bienveillance' ends this debut on an interesting Progressive melody (although that's the only one).

In fact, bar that track, I do not hear any Progressive elements in this album, but I do clearly detect plenty of Symphonic Metal traits like aggressive guitars, heavy drums and loud keyboards within the tracks. Sadly, the light female vocals slow down the rough music that Talvienkeli tries to deliver.

This is only the beginning for this band who have already taken part in talent/springboard events (such as the French festivals Musique de RU and Emergenza) and reading their website indicates that Talvienkeli have stage experience. It would therefore be interesting to see them performing live as a support act for bigger bands to get a complete opinion, although based solely on this studio release, there is the possibility that this opinion remains somewhat less than positive.
