In summary, I would like to thank Salem for getting 2018 off to such a magnificent start.

I really wasn't expecting very much from this band who initially formed way back in 1979 and were, at that time, considered part of NWOBHM. The original group actually split in 1983 and this is their third album since reforming in 2009. How wrong could I be? 'Attrition' is an excellent classic Melodic Rock album from this five-piece band from Hull.
The opening title track comes bursting out of the speakers with a delicious chunky guitar intro before developing into a well-structured, up-tempo rocker. One thing that springs immediately to mind is how similar lead vocalist Simon Saxby sounds to Uriah Heep's Bernie Shaw. The similarities with Heep don't end there as, on a number of occasions throughout the album, I was reminded of Heep's output post-Ken Hensley.

'Black And White' follows and grabs you immediately with some pulsing bass and lead guitar that's very reminiscent of Gotthard's 'Firedance'. The song suddenly changes tempo and I could swear I was about to listen to 'Life's Been Good' by Joe Walsh due to the acoustic chords being strummed. In saying that, there is no plagiarism here and the song is well constructed and probably my favourite on the album. 'I'm The One' is the third song and it once again produces the goods. Some lovely, slow acoustic and melodic lead guitar provides the intro which then punches into a mid-paced rocker with a superb chorus.

I do not have enough space to detail every one of the eleven songs on offer, but suffice to say that the high standard is consistent and there is not a filler in sight. I was not a huge fan of NWOBHM, and despite the fact this is where Salem cut their teeth, this is a much more modern sounding band who are not afraid to express their Classic Rock influences but in their own style. When a band you have previously not heard forces you to check out their back catalogue, you know you are onto a winner. I will also be looking to catch them live and hopefully hear them playing 'Stay With Me' from this album. This song sums up Salem to a tee. It's a Melodic Rocker with an edge that bands like Pretty Maids and Treat use to such great effect and bolstered by an infectious chorus.

In summary, I would like to thank Salem for getting 2018 off to such a magnificent start.
