Trophies Of Man / Neon Animal - The Big Red, London (UK) - 14 July 2018

Neon Animal are always exciting to watch. Mark Thorn has that Mick Jagger-like androgyny as he pulls off his threads and high heels with as much swagger as any girl in the crowd, his gyrations being all lips with no hips and provoking all kinds of is-he-or-isn't-he questions, intriguing in their impossibility of resolution. Coupled with killer material and the superb guitar playing of Miguel Martins, quality licks dripping from every pore as his guitar literally weeps with emotion, they are always a Rock 'n' Roll bombshell. Skipping like a vacationing whippet on speed, Thorn is Shirley Temple on crack in a world that has gone very wrong for her as her innocence can no longer be seen in the rear-view mirror while she still tries to do her hair and smudged lipstick in vain. They have the feel of The Rolling Stones striped with the authentic Gutter Rock 'n' Roll of Faster Pussycat and the pathos of the millennium. When Thorn rips open the zip of his shirt to expose his bare chest, it feels like the cut of a razor blade, and when Martins solos about Rock 'n' Roll suicide, his tone is too painful for words. Maybe it's only bands like this that can speak to the young these days.

Trophies Of Man are more of a straightforward Rock band, one that was born out of King Lizard, although I think they are way better. Harder than Neon Animal, with the melodic guitar and backing vocals of Dave Winkler, they retain an accessibility and tracks like 'Never Be Mine' and 'Devil On My Back' are definite keepers. Known for his worldly-wise if optimistic sense of humour, singer Flash Sawyer dominates the stage, leaning forward to the crowd to engage and involve as well as having a mean line in microphone twirl and stomp. Tonight, for me, there is a new line-up and I do miss their former drummer and the talented backing vocals of their previous bassist. I am not sure how new this new line-up is and maybe they just need more time to bed in. Also, the sound tonight is not the best. However, having seen this band at Hard Rock Hell AOR, I known they possess great potential and Sawyer possesses the ability to sing like Ian Gillan when the conditions are right, and so I look forward to seeing them again when the sound quality is better.
