Steve Conte / Rich Ragany And The Digressions - The Slaughtered Lamb, London (UK) - 08 August 2018

This was apparently the first gig for Rich Ragany And The Digressions, Ragany being from the Role Models alongside new guy Michael Gaffney. Their sound is not the punky stuff you might expect, they are trying to do something different with a bit of Americana that combines acoustic with Hawaiian-style sounding fifties guitar. They have a few technical difficulties, but seem to go down well with the friendly sold-out crowd.

Being a solo show, the focus tonight is on Steve Conte's own recordings. The show kicks off with 'The Truth Ain't Pretty' and 'Dark In The Spotlight', but he also enjoys a good cover and it's not long before he is launching into covers of Earl Vince And The Valiants' 'Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight' and Plastic Bertrand's 'Ca Plane Pour Moi'; indeed, it is plain sailing for Conte at this point as he is very much playing to his own crowd. The place is jam-packed and the atmosphere high. There is only one Company Of Wolves song in the set and that is 'Romance On The Rocks', a fast Rock 'n' Roll number (although, I must admit, I had a secret longing to hear 'Call Of The Wild').

Next up is 'Teenage Kicks' with special guest Duncan Reid from Duncan Reid And The Big Heads, but it's not long before we're back into the Rock territory with a cover of AC/DC's 'Rock 'N' Roll Damnation' that is interwoven into 'Can't Keep A Good Man Down'. 'Junk Planet' gets a huge cheer when Conte announces that it will be on the new Michael Monroe album. Following by a Rock 'n' Roll version of Tom Waite's 'I Don't Wanna Grow Up', there's then a slinky, sexy version of 'Busload Of Hope' in the vein of 'Mustang Sally'. Jim Jones is up next with some 'Daddy Rollin'' that features some blistering guitar. Following a punk version of 'Mercedes Benz', we get a trio of Conte solo songs, 'Gypsy Cab', 'OK DJ' and one of the most enjoyable songs of the night, his new single 'Gimme Gimme Rockaway' which says a lot amongst so many classics.

The night ends with, firstly, a great surprise in 'Roll Over Beethoven' with Edward TudorPole of Tenpole Tudor, one of those special gig moments you will never forget, which Conte follows with the New York Dolls classic 'Pills' where Ragany also invades the stage. With so much on offer in terms of Rock 'n' Roll chops, it was great to see this recognised by a London sold-out show.
