Angel / Heavy Pettin' / Adam Bomb - Camden Underworld, London (UK) - 13 October 2018

Adam Bomb got everybody talking by setting fire to his gear in a relatively short set, mostly of covers. It was a shame that he had to go on so early as it was before most people arrived, although those that saw him had only good things to say.

Main opener Heavy Pettin' had not played London for over 30 years, singer Hamie now living in Texas. Most tracks were from their most popular debut album or singles reflecting the peak of their success, and reminding us how many catchy songs they had. Kicking off with 'Victim Of The Night', 'Roll The Dice' and 'Love Times Love', Hamie still has his distinctive rasp which would make him identifiable from the off. Twirling a glittery microphone with tartan scarf, pumping it up and down and holding it out, he has retained the skills of a frontman and they looked confident and delivered a substantial set of ten songs including 'Shout It Out', 'In And Out Of Love' and 'Hell Is Beautiful'.

Another blast from the past was Punky Meadows and Frank Dimino playing 'Angel'. Punky looked amazing, tall and lean in white boot cut flares and a white sequined jacket with black wings on the back, the epitome of noble elegance and grace. While his playing was in some ways understated, it was also regal and suited to the pomp of high Glam Rock like Queen. There's no doubt he has the X factor: the looks, the stance, the clothes. It was quite something to take in. Frank's voice was absolutely spot on and neither of them look their age. The reception from the crowd was warm as they seemed in awe at the chance to see the band they thought they would never see.

After 'On The Rocks' it wasn't not long before the crowd were singing to 'Can You Feel It' and 'Wild And Hot'. The Proggy side of the band was not neglected as we got a chance to hear 'The Fortune' with the keyboards of Charlie Calv heavily featured and an essential part of the sound. Things were kept commercial with crowd favourite 'Don't Leave Me Lonely'. We also got a chance to hear from both Punky's and Frank's solo albums 'Lost And Lonely' and 'Never Again', both excellent tracks from excellent albums.

There were a couple of covers, 'Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart', a studio song covered by Angel, and 'All The Young Dudes', recorded by them for a live album. I don't think I will ever have another moment like Punky playing his entire solo to me on the balcony, making it quite difficult to take notes!

The crowd spontaneously broke into a chant of "Angel, Angel, Angel" while they were still on stage, causing Punky to shake his fist in a jubilant, powerful gesture. 'Rock 'n' Roller' was another great favourite with the crowd, who helped Frank with the vocals, he demonstrating his talent and skill with an extra long note. The jubilant encore was of course 'The Tower', one of the band's most iconic tracks. The performance was polished and slick and you would never guess it had been so long since they last played live.

There was a real atmosphere of we are pinching ourselves and we can't really believe our luck at this gig. The crowd had nothing but love and respect for Angel tonight and it was so well deserved. We just hope they don't leave it so long to come back.

Dawn's review almost does justice to the gig. Adam Bomb did get things going and HP carried on building the atmosphere. Punky, Frank and the guys were immense from minute one to the end of The Tower. An unbelievable set brilliantly delivered. Been an Angel fan for 40 years and never thought I would get to hear them live. Big tick on the unlikely to happen bucket list. It was like seeing Starz at the Garage, magical memories.
