Coheed And Cambria / Chon - O2 Academy, Birmingham (UK) - 14th October 2018

After queuing for what seemed like an age outside the venue due to security checks and the like it was great to finally get inside just in time to see Chon – a quartet from San Diego. I must admit I knew nothing about them before they were announced as support for the tour. There was a sizeable crowd before they hit the stage so I had quite high expectations. The band have Progressive sound and the thirty-minute set was all instrumental with lots of chord changes and powerful riffing. These guys are obviously experts in their craft and the audience were very appreciative. I look forward to an album or two!

It wasn't long before the lights darkened again and the very large crowd went nuts. The band came onto the stage whilst 'Prologue' was appropriately playing over the speakers. The new album 'Vaxis – Act I: The Unheavenly Creatures', had only been out for a week and once again is recounting tales from the Amory Wars, the sci-fi epic that Claudio Sanchez has meticulously penned over the last fifteen years, and it appeared that all of the audience have bought or downloaded the album as they were singing along to 'The Dark Sentencer' as if it's a ten year old classic... hey, in 2028 it probably will be! 'Here We Are Juggernaut' was up next and the crowd went into a frenzy. I was amazed at how all the fans sang each and every word all through the show.

Classics such as 'Devil In Jersey City', 'In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3' and 'The Crowing' cleverly segued into each other. Sanchez and his boys never let up and the audience young and old lapped up every moment. They (myself included) love the new songs as well as the old. 'Unheavenly Creatures' went down a storm and 'Island' had everybody joining in. 'Wake Up' is melancholic with Sanchez on acoustic guitar and this was the only time for a breather.

C&C were tight as a duck's arse and Claudio's vocals were superb throughout. Before long it was encore time and when Sanchez appeared with his twin-neck Gibson you knew wha was coming: a riotous 'Welcome Home' hit the mark and the crowd went home with big cheesy grins on their faces. Great gig from a brilliant band!

  • SeaDog57 : just an observation. I just got Issue 89 at the Bookstore and when i looked at the spine of the magazine it says "Fireworks Issue 85 Winter Jan - Mar 2019" Was this a misprint? The rest of the Magazine is Issue 89. Was just wondering did anyone else notice this?
