This evokes great memories and has enjoyable songs, and it's certainly one for collectors of "back in the day" nostalgia.

This is a UK blast from the past as I remember these guys from the eighties, and if my memory serves me well, I even saw them opening up for Stryper at the Hammersmith Odeon. Around that particular time, they'd already been established for a few years and had the backing of (the infamous) Jonathan King at one stage. I am pretty sure they had a major single banned from the UK charts as King had "over-plugged" it, which meant it was disqualified; that was such a shame as it was outselling Def Leppard and Whitesnake at the time.

The band ended up being signed to CBS/Columbia Records, but in the usual case of record companies not knowing what was good for them, whilst they had been into the studio to record 'Reach Out', the label chose not to release it and subsequently put out an album of covers instead. This release features the nine songs that were originally recorded back in the day as well as an additional eight tracks, four of which are demos with the other four being live offerings.

Being from Birmingham, Briar are very much what you would expect sound-wise. Think of the UK bands that were doing the rounds in the eighties and you'll get the idea. The nine original songs are good, 'Stop Me Now', 'Getting Stronger' and 'Show Me The Way' being good examples of what the band could do. My only concern is the production now sounds a little thin, and this is further highlighted by the fact that the demos actually sound beefier than the nine originals. Whilst it probably wouldn't have been possible to get the original masters to transform the songs into the 21st century, I am sure something could have been done!

This evokes great memories and has enjoyable songs, and it's certainly one for collectors of "back in the day" nostalgia.
