Not a bad album by any stretch of the imagination, but the undeniable difference between present and latter day Hoobastank is stark and off-putting at times.

Let's face it, it's been fifteen years since Hoobastank released a decent Rock album. 'The Reason' was a monster of an album and sold by the truckload. The title track gained multiple successes all over the world. Perhaps fed up with labels trying to recreate the winning Rock formula, the band lost their way, and this album is perhaps a result of that.

This is a pure Pop album, having far more in common with bands like Maroon 5 and latter-day Train than the modern Hard Rock of yore. Indeed, Matt Wallace produces the whole shebang, and at times you wonder if you are actually listening to the same band that came up with modern Rock gems like 'Crawling In The Dark' and 'Out Of Control'.
It's not a bad album by any stretch of the imagination, but the undeniable difference between present and latter day Hoobastank is stark and off-putting at times. Vocalist Doug Robb is the shining light on this album, and the band wears their collective influences on their sleeves. Prince influences are to the fore on the Funk-influenced 'More Beautiful', 'Head Over Heels' covers Tears For Fears, whilst 'We Don't Need the World' has hints of Bowie.

Of the more up to date sounding material, 'Buzzkill' is a creditable modern Pop song, 'Better Left Unsaid' whiffs of early Maroon 5, and 'There Will be Another' isn't that different to what The All American Rejects are doing right now.

Having not really made a decent or popular album for a very long time, it is perhaps predictable that the band should change direction musically. They've got nothing to lose, and who can blame them for wanting to try something a little different, and attempt to be relevant once again.

Be warned though, Hoobastank is a very different beast from fifteen years ago.
