Bullets and Octane - Electric Ballroom, London (UK) - 09 December 2018

Opening as a second support act on a Sunday night is never easy, especially when you're not exactly the sort of band fans might think of as an opener. Bullets and Octane made it look easy.

Breaking out with 'Bad Mother Fucker' from their latest album, 'Waking Up Dead', vocalist Gene Louis swaggered about the stage for a couple of minutes before deciding that being down in the crowd looked far more fun. The rest of the band drove the guttural sound – there was no losing that raw, unpolished grit that they push in smaller venues. For the next song, 'My Disease', a circle formed in the audience around Gene Louis and guitarist Felipe Rodrigo, the two of them almost egging the crowd on. This band are their own rabble rousers.

By 'Waking Up Dead' they had the crowd; there were no egos trying to outdo each other, or stupid solos. The sound was thick and rough, the performance no-frills but all thrills. Lurching into 'Fuck You Song' the band positively battered the crowd into submission, Gene Louis making sure his rounds of the crowd reached right back to the sound desk.

Oldie 'Song For The Underdog' epitomised the band's short and sweet approach – sure they might have more time headlining a small venue – in a condensed slot. Like all the tracks it worked because it's catchy but furious and brief. With these guys it's blink and you'll miss it. A sexy and moody 'Fires' lit the Ballroom up while the anthemic 'Pirates' had Gene Louis and Felipe back in the crowd, facing the crowd off for 'Save Me Sorrow' to round the set off.

It was a whistle stop tour of their back catalogue and current material, one that oozed the confidence and charisma of a band that knows their stuff; no venue is too cool for these guys. Their attitude is roguish, the performance feeling off-the-cuff, made all the more charming by how they manage to make a show out of a lack of one.

They say the next album's almost ready. I can't say it'll be just like this show – that's not exactly their style – but I bet you it'll be electric.

  • SeaDog57 : just an observation. I just got Issue 89 at the Bookstore and when i looked at the spine of the magazine it says "Fireworks Issue 85 Winter Jan - Mar 2019" Was this a misprint? The rest of the Magazine is Issue 89. Was just wondering did anyone else notice this?
