Uriah Heep / Von Hertzen Brothers - Rock City, Nottingham (UK) - 15 December 2018

As soon as I saw they were touring again, Uriah Heep was put on my must attend list. I have seen them numerous times over the years, and one thing I will say is that every time I see them, they always seem abundantly happy doing what they do. The last time I saw them live was in 2013 at Download, but the last tour was at the Leadmill in Sheffield, where they appeared with Asia, and that was in 2005. This year they were supporting their new album 'Living The Dream', which has had very good reviews from the press. Before we could see how good they were live though, we had the Von Hertzen Brothers, who had appeared at Download earlier in the year, but who I had not seen.

Now, when we got into Rock City, the lights were down, with no band on stage. We quickly found our spot, by which time they were just coming on. Grab cameras and run. Down at the front, one of my cameras was malfunctioning, and I spent a couple of minutes trying to sort it out, so wasn't really paying attention to the music. But you know those times when your concentration is somewhere else, but the sounds at the back are knocking to come through; this is what happened to me, and I thought "hmm". I am still not quite sure how to describe their music, but it had definite Prog tendencies, without being essentially Progressive. Without working it out, I decided that I quite liked it. As with most support bands, they were not on for that long, and I would have liked another couple of songs just to get my head around it. The crowd would have liked a bit more also.

Uriah Heep. Started in 1970, and still going strong. The defining word there is "strong". They are not just doing small venues, and popping up now and again, but touring all over the world and still to large audiences. There was a good attendance here for tonight's show, and it took me a while to realise that upstairs was open, and that doesn't happen all the time.

As vocalist Bernie Shaw said when he stated how long it had been since they had appeared there, "We have been busy". And they started off with a new song, 'Grazed By Heaven', before going back to 1982 with 'Too Scared To Run', from one of my favourite (I was going to say later, but this was released in 1982, 36 years ago!) albums 'Abominog'. They then came right back to the present with another two new songs, 'Living The Dream' and 'Take Away My Soul'. And this was the pattern through the night, back to the beginning, and then new material.

'Rocks In The Road' was particularly good, being a bit of a lengthy beast, and they did a total of five tracks from the new album, and they fitted in seamlessly, not sounding like "old and new" at all. I have to admit being a little surprised by the fact that, despite having an extensive back catalogue, all the older material spanned a time period of only three years, although you do have to remember that there were five albums released in that time. Those were the days when bands released two albums a year, rather than one every five. 'Appy days, as Mick Box would say. Of special note was 'Gypsy', 'July Morning', which everybody in the room sang along to, and 'Lady In Black', which also got the crowd going. What was really encouraging was the young girl going crazy on her dad's (I assume) shoulders, to the last song of the night, 'Easy Livin'', which bodes well for the future of Rock music.

The band, as ever, appeared to enjoy every minute, and it was the end of a very busy week for me, having attended two concerts and a stage show before this, but I was probably most happy that I had come to this one, because I was having second thoughts at one stage. If you feel old and jaded, go to a Uriah Heep concert, and get your batteries charged up. You won't regret it.

Set list:- Grazed By Heaven, Too Scared To Run, Living The Dream, Take Away My Soul, Rainbow Demon, Waters Flowing, Rocks In The Road, Gypsy, Look At Yourself, July Morning, Lady In Black. Encore:- Sunrise, Easy Livin'.
