Avatar / The Mahones / Dylan Walshe - Shepherd's Bush Empire, London (UK) - 20 January 2019

On a cold winter's night in an over-ornate Shepherd's Bush atmosphere, Gothenburg's outlandish Avant-garde Metal and Melodic Death Metal quintet Avatar brought the unique equation of their own branded label of Avatar Country to the deepest heart of West London, consolably in the most controversial fashion. In the masquerade essence of tonight's pantomime appearance from the midst of the eccentric brutes, the prominent venue of the Empire seemed to be nearly packed out with the flocks and masses of Avatar fanatics queuing in various differentiating lines, including the minority appearing in Avatar stage attire face-paint and fancy dress.

Opening the proceedings to this evening's performance was Dublin born acoustic Folk pioneer Dylan Walshe, warming up the ethos of this late afternoon's assembly with his own brand of Celtic-infused one-man band-based experience. Moreover, Dylan solemnly attained the multitude's attention with his solo singer-songwriter Irish flavoured spirit, however it appeared to not fit appropriately into the grasp of what tonight's heavily-immersed agenda is sacredly all about and materialised into the usual tedious acoustic conundrum that most acoustic acts face today in the wild of live musical performance. Dylan would easily puzzle in to a local bar or the pub scene, but does not fit accordingly into the breaths of a Heavy Metal production and recital, therefore this made no sense why this act was chosen in the wrong place and the wrong time.

Succeeding the openings of Mr. Walshe were boisterous Canadian Irish Punk sextet The Mahones, embracing the stage with their own printed marque of heavily bombastic Irish-jig musicality in the vain of genre-sharing neighbours Flogging Molly. Into the bargain, The Mahones can really perform ecstatically, with drummer Guillaume Lauzom astonishingly standing out amongst grains of the ferocious pack; along with the ambitious showmanship of Ontario's impressive elite on stage, whilst combining words with the onlooking crowd who were flamboyantly joining in enthusiastically to the elemental basis of this uplifting party. In addition to this, the outfit once again do not essentially fit well with this card's proceedings, however they did admiringly win the crowd over with some deserved passion and pride, even if each and every track sounded similar on each wavelength or was placed ornamentally inside the basically identical vibe basket.

With the drapes of the circus-esque backdrops and the hierarchal curtains dropping down before it was time for the bizarre orientations of Swedish ringmasters Avatar, the congregation of Shepherd's Bush indulged intensely with ornamental gratitude into the intoxicating anticipation of the formulaic adventures of Avatar Country; awaiting the paths of the freakish night creatures to take the stage in awe-inspiring proforma, along with intriguing spells of the mellifluously provided raging projections and controversial enigmas. Right from the off with the king rising from the depths below of the London Town venue with opener 'A Statue Of The King', the devouring personality and charismatic preferences of the Swedes were consistently present, creating their own circus of horrors in the meantime to the horde's fulfilment and pleasing pleasure.

Expected fan preferences 'Let It Burn' and 'Smells Like A Freakshow' positioned pleasingly into a decorative and melodious generated clasp, whilst reaching the gratifying clenches of the observing Heavy Metal mass, before hitting the high water marks with colossal and championing numbers of the country-vibrating 'The King Welcomes You To Avatar Country' and the soul-crushing 'Hail To The Apocalypse'. Sharing over a superior and wide range of entries from the profound burrows of the group's diversified back catalogue, Avatar approvingly distributed a triumphant tale of freakshow-based lunacy and a musically deranged presentation of the black arts through the seductive sombre states of Avant-garde to perfection.

Considering all the juggling chaos tonight, in reality the one downside of this evening was that the resonation of the crazy-minded Avatar vocalist Johannes Eckerstrom appeared to be suffering with some minor disturbances tonight, wavering with some tiresome effect from the possibility of overuse and a gaggle of long-duration episodes in a mammoth buffet of an overpowering touring schedule. More than likely, this was unnoticeable and did not come in any form of damaging effect, leading the cavalry through an outstanding setlist on this extravagant night.

Nevertheless, Avatar will confidently return to the British Channels very soon and will be assured to release a new record or a brand-spanking new live release in the midst of Avant-garde affection, capturing the hearts of the members of the ongoing freakshow for the foreseeable future. Through circus acts, jester smiles and a concoction of masquerade disguises, Avatar Country will break through the drapes of the beloved curtains of the king over and over again, promisingly enduring a phenomenon with the upmost professionalism and the high-flying banners of humoristic dignity.
