Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators / Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons - Eventim Apollo, London (UK) - 20 February 2019

Kicking off with 'Big Mouth' from their 2017 EP, Phil Campbell and his bastard sons (well three real ones plus singer Neil Starr who is not related) look confident and Phil Campbell looks a fine sight with his golden Flying V with Motörhead motif. This is a short set of only eight songs, but they still manage to fit in five songs from their fine debut album 'Age Of Absurdity' and two Motörhead numbers – 'Born To Raise Hell' and 'Ace Of Spades' (which they dedicate to members of Motörhead not here anymore). Songs like 'Ring Leader' are harder like Motörhead with a driving rhythm yet feature clever underlying melodies, and on the other side we see slower Doom-laden, more Black Sabbath sounding numbers like 'Dark Days'. It is too short really, but a great start while we wait for our main course.

Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons Live

Slash alongside Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators are looking and sounding amazing. The only visible snake in the house is a bright green inflatable one being shaken furiously by someone at the front, and while an enormous amount of history (of which Slash's snakes are only a very small part) must be in the minds of everyone at this sold-out show, from the twenty-two song incredible value-for-money set there is only one Guns N' Roses number. This underlines that this is very much Slash's solo outfit showcasing his talents and those of his solo band including the distinctive tones of Kennedy and there is absolutely no need for this band to rely on past Guns N' Roses glories.

The material is pretty well evenly spread across all four of the solo albums with slightly less from the second, but six tracks from the new album shows a confidence in the fact that this band continue to produce quality material and thrive independently of the GN'R legacy. There are oceans of long fabulous solos from Slash, ranging from the fast and furious, through the more lyrical style that's closer to what you would find in something like 'Sweet Child O' Mine', to an almost voodoo groove.

He is, of course, the main man but every member of the band is given a chance to shine. Indeed, to ring the changes, about halfway through the set Myles takes a break while bassist Todd Kerns steps in to cover the vocal duties for two tracks from the debut album – 'We're All Gonna Die' (originally sung by Iggy Pop) and 'Doctor Alibi' (originally sung by Lemmy Kilmister) – where proceedings take a decidedly old-school Metal turn reminding me a little of W.A.S.P. Kennedy even plays guitar along the back line with the others while Slash takes the well-deserved spotlight for extended solos underlining that this outfit work as a team.

The light show also deserves a mention particularly the red fir- like effects which add a truly dramatic aspect to events. The crowd roar and scream from beginning to end, thus showing how the energy of the show is masterfully created and maintained even though the only GN'R number 'Nighttrain' did not appear until almost the end. Of course, the crowd go mad for this number, but they react the same for the best loved of Slash's solo songs, including encore 'Anastasia' with its unmistakeable melody line and solo.

Slash cuts an iconic image on stage wowing the audience at every turn and he is still capable of all his jumping and hopping Rock 'n' Roll moves. One of the greatest mysteries in the universe is why Slash's top hat never falls off and it remains an enigma unsolved by mankind. When something is legendary, you know it when you see it and Hammersmith saw it tonight.
