A really involving listening experience.

This is not the usual fare of this magazine and web site. In fact, I would go so far as to wonder whether it is the 'usual' fare of any music magazine! Nevertheless, it is an album with which I am personally rather taken. A few of you reading this might be, too…but a CD comprised of Celtic inspired dark ambient soundscapes plus (on some tracks) spoken words and with guitars replaced by the sound of storms, processed voices and animal calls and white noise is likely to be too utterly strange for most of you to leave the comfort of your armchairs to investigate, I think.

From The Bogs Of Aughiska hail from the west of Ireland and the publicity sheet accompanying the CD suggests that 'this is the musical equivalent of standing on top of the Cliffs Of Moher with a gale force wind in your face'. Having personally stood on top of the Cliffs Of Moher (albeit on a calm and sunny day) I do have a start on most of you in being able to imagine this: and opening number, 'The Great Sea Stack At The Cliffs Of Moher' provides exactly this imagery.

The remaining four tracks on this album (it lasts for more than 40 minutes) all have their own unique qualities and textures. 'Aos Si' is a relatively calm, synthesised scenario with people talking over it (about what I have not exactly ascertained!) while 'Leabhar Gabhala Eireann' is a very disturbing soundscape indeed, with lashings of white noise. 'Of Gods And Fighting Men' and 'Crosswinds' complete the journey – again both contrasting with one another and with what has gone before.

An album for the really adventurous and anybody prepared for a really involving listening experience!
