Electric Boys / Last Great Dreamers / Hell's Addiction - Camden Underworld, London (UK) - 20 March 2019

Hell's Addiction are a meat and potatoes Heavy Rock band with material that spans melodic to heavier stuff. The thing I noticed about them most is they have a powerful drummer with sticks like magic wands (black with white tips) who knocked the hell out of his kit. It's a mix of classic Rock and Metal and I thought this was a band still feeling for its identity.

Last Great Dreamers bring a totally different vibe; dancing on the stage, swinging their hips to the beat, they bring catchy, infectious, lollipop Punk with a hint of glitter and sweet style seventies joie de vivre. Every time I see them they make me think of 1970's TOTP, especially during 'Glitterball Apocalypse' and I feel like I am ten years old again at a party, because, of course, children in general know much better how to have fun. Following an uptempo punky version of 'Only Crime' they moved to the more melodic, slower and reflective song 'Miles Away', dedicated by guitarist Slyder Smith to the recently departed Bernie Torme with an appropriately soulful and atmospheric string solo.

The energy transformed to party again following the super seventies style chant of 'White Light Black Heart', combining an undoubtedly Glam Rock chorus with thrashy Punk guitar for the verse and cowbell for a delightful seventies stew. Following with a song from their new album only a year old, they dubbed it "a kitten" of an album bearing in mind this band go back to the eighties. The audience synced into the high energy of the chorus of 'Far From Home' from the bands 'Retrosexual' recording, before they launched into the home straight with Punk-a-licious crowd favourites 'Dope School' and 'Oblivion Kids'.

So the crowd were nicely warmed up by the time the Electric Boys took the stage confidently with 'Hangover In Hangover', a single from their new album, justifiably so as it's one of their best songs. Aware that the crowd may be more accustomed to their older hits they reverted back in time with 'Groovus Maximus' and a snippet of 'No Woman No Cry' which morphed into the Beatles-like 'Mary In The Mystery World'. It wasn't long before we had another excellent song from the new album, 'There She Goes Again', and by the time we got to the old skool 'Electrified' the whole crowd was bouncing in the groove, and the energy of many in one endeavour had completely lifted the vibe.

Conny Bloom took a break to joke that there were so many Swedish here he had been trying to get away from them and they were following him, before they launched into another block of tracks from their excellent latest album; 'Gone Gone Gone' which Conny explained is about a friend who has passed away, 'Swampmotofrog' which is an energetic instrumental and 'You Spark My Heart', another catchy single.

Those who came for the oldies were not forgotten with the playing of 'Rags To Riches' and the indispensable 'All Lips And Hips'. Conny came to the fore many times to engage with the crowd and provide many photo ops, such as playing the guitar behind his head. There's no way he looked his age in his long and lean leather boot cut jeans and boho dress shirt with double cuffs undone and Native American turquoise and silver. My friend who is about 28 thought Conny must be about the same age.

There's still something special and sexy about the Electric Boys after all these years. Not just stellar musicianship, but also a primal attraction that keeps an audience coming back. So nice to see the latest album working so well live and that they have produced music that will become indispensable in the set. They also possess an authentic diversity with their Funk and Blues heritage, which is undoubtedly cool to even the most hardened hipster. They've been away a while and the word still needs to spread a bit more that they are stronger than ever, but once the cat is out of the bag there's no reason why they cannot rule the world.
