Brian Downey's Alive And Dangerous - Camden Underworld, London (UK) - 14 November 2019

There are a number of acts flying the Thin Lizzy flag these days, from established tribute acts such as Limehouse Lizzy to Black Star Riders featuring Scott Gorham. Alive And Dangerous fit somewhere in the middle. Featuring original drummer Brian Downey along with Brian Grace and Phil Edgar on guitars/vocals and Matt Wilson on bass guitar/ vocals, the band offer less a tribute and more a musical journey in the spirit of Thin Lizzy.

The Underworld had a capacity audience of all ages embracing songs from what would be considered the classic years of Thin Lizzy, 1975-1979. If like most people you fell in love with the 'Live And Dangerous' release then the set offered here would not have disappointed. 'The Boys Are Back In Town', 'Cowboy Song' and the beautiful 'Southbound' had everyone singing along and reaching for their air guitars. The' Black Rose' album was featured with 'Waiting For An Alibi' one of the stand-out performances of the night for me.

Brian Downey is still the class drummer he has always been and in my opinion one of the best Rock drummers to emerge during the seventies, his subtle feel enhanced so many of the Lizzy songs like 'Dancing In The Moonlight' or 'Suicide'. Singer Matt Wilson has a voice to match the warmth of Phil Lynott's and a steady bass hand that drives so many of the songs, his in-between stage banter connected with the audience and give an intimate feel to the evening. The twin guitar attack fuelled by the two Les Paul guitars of Brian Grace and Phil Edgar matched the original songs' legendary twin guitar sound splendidly.

I would hope the band can expand their repertoire up to the 'Renegade' release as there are many more musical gems that would fit into this set with the classics. Alive And Dangerous are keeping the music of Thin Lizzy alive and well.

Ray Paul
