Even if you don't like Motorhead, 'Lemmy' is well worth watching.

There has been a spate of rock documentaries recently including the excellent Rush one, but rather than being a history of Lemmy's career this is more of 'a day in the life' type thing. It's fascinating stuff.

The movie opens with shots of Los Angeles and then we see Lemmy playing a video game in his dingy apartment. There's even a section of the film where Lemmy takes the viewer around his two bedroom apartment; he says it's cheap and near the Rainbow, the famous rock drinking establishment on the Sunset Strip. Aside from being small and an absolute mess it's filled with Nazi and military memorabilia, books, VHS tapes and DVDs, and lots of Motorhead related stuff. There's a lot of stuff. It's definitely a rock star's place. Though he admitted he was broke when he moved to LA in the early nineties he must have some money these days especially after royalties from Metallica's cover versions and the TV adverts; and sales of Motorhead albums have grown extensively over the past decade, plus all the touring and merchandise. Motorhead haven't been this popular since the original line-up years.

Of course there is archive footage and interviews with a wealth of rock stars and admirers, including Slash, Nikki Sixx, Ozzy, Alice Cooper and members of Metallica and even Javis Cocker of Pulp. Lemmy lives the rock star's life and everybody knows it. He lives and breathes rock 'n' roll. His autobiography 'White Line Fever' was one of the biggest disappointments in rock literature (it should have been on par with Crue's 'The Dirt) but this film does show just how interesting and intelligent Lemmy is; he is full of great anecdotes that he vividly recalls from his past. At 63, he's a miserable sod but he seems approachable and he's got a lot to say. Kudos to filmmakers Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski for making this film happen. Even if you don't like Motorhead, 'Lemmy' is well worth watching.
