SLEEP TOKEN
Sheffield: Leadmill - 15th November 2021

I was looking forward to this. Having been impressed by their latest release, 'This Place Will Become Your Tomb', it was nice to see a band come out so soon after a release, and this would be the first time I had caught them since my initiation at Download in 2018.

First up though was female singer/songwriter A.A.Williams, who was accompanied by a bassist, keyboard/guitarist and drummist, while she herself also played guitar. To be honest, I couldn't make out a word she was singing, or in fact, any when she was talking between songs. Most of the music was on one level; quite slow with little variation, and when it did vary, with the addition of some "lead guitar", the playing style of that was the same for each song it was used in. It got a bit louder towards the end, the last one being fairly melodic, which caused the crowd to warm to her a little, but overall it really wasn't my thing, and the descriptive that came into my head was "music to fall asleep to".

So, onto the headliners, who are definitely catching on, as the venue was packed. And it had been quite some time since I had attended a concert where the atmosphere was as intense. It actually reminded me of when I saw my first Peter Gabriel solo concert at Sheffield City Hall, many, many years ago. The lights went off around 9.20, and the roar was huge. When lights came on, and there were not that many, we had vocalist "Vessell", standing behind a keyboard, centre, but not front of the stage, performing 'Atlantic', the opening track from new album 'This Place Will Become Your Tomb'. Having done this, he lowered himself to the floor and crawled to the front of stage, before continuing with another new track 'Hypnosis', now joined by the rest of the band plus three backing singers. Lights flashed frantically, while the front three of Vessell, the bassist, known only as "the bassist" and guitarist, known only as "the guitarist" moved around like they were plugged into an electric socket, and they had already got the crowd singing along. The lighting was all behind them, so you only caught clear glimpses of them now and again, quick flashes of the white iconography on their masks and backs. They utilised backing tapes, a fact made obvious when they did 'Mine', with its distinctive synth refrain and no-one on the keyboards, and this was also evident with other songs throughout the set. In total, there were seven new songs in the main set, with five from the first album, with the intro to 'Sugar' receiving the biggest cheer of the night. This was followed by 'The Love You Want' with all of the crowd singing along.

It was very impressive to see this group of musicians set out on a path, and rigidly stick to it. The mystery aspect of their act is very well honed; we don't know who they are, all exposed skin is rendered black, and you don't even know their hair colour, as all their heads are covered. There is no communication whatsoever with the audience between songs, not even announcing what they are about to play. The main set lasted until around 22.15, and it wasn't long before they were back for the encore, which started with the taped intro to 'The Night Does Not Belong To God', again greeted by a huge cheer, and followed by 'The Offering', both from the debut. I already knew what the last song was going to be, and consequently thought I knew how it was going to end, and I was right, as all but Vessell, who walked to the rear of the stage in darkness, left the stage. He came back to the front, armed with guitar, and sang 'Missing Limbs', again accompanied by the audience. At the end, still no words were spoken, as he stood there, centre stage, with his arms out receiving the applause, following which he calmly walked off, and that was it.

This had been what I would call an intense performance, excellently performed, and well appreciated by all attending. I actually spoke to someone who said he had been waiting five years for this, which was a bit weird as, as mentioned, I saw them in 2018, and they were formed in 2016, but not really known. My only criticism would be that sometimes the bass was a little overpowering and the vocals got lost in it, but overall, an excellent show, and they are scheduled to play next June at Download. I doubt they will be playing this sized venue in the future.

Set List: Atlantic, Hypnosis, Mine, Jaws, Dark Signs, Like That, Nazareth, Sugar, The Love You Want, Fall For Me, Alkaline, Higher.
Encore: The Night Does Not Belong To God, The Offering, Missing Limbs.
