Powerful folk metal CD that has a quirky charm all of it's own.

Dalriada are a Hungarian folk metal/rock group and this is their sixth studio album to date, though this is my first experience of the band. What is different about Dalriada is the fact that they sing in their native tongue, which adds a whole new dimension to what you're listening to. Also they use a vast array of musical instruments, including fiddles, accordions, flutes and assorted stringed instruments which bring out a whole different slant, style, sound and attitude to your usual folk metal recording. Once you get over the vocals not being in English (not a problem for me), the music of Dalriada then starts to work it's quirky, folksy strangeness on you, and you begin to find yourself enjoying a band and an album that usually I/you would never have had the pleasure (and I do mean pleasure) of hearing before.

After playing this recording half a dozen times and more I still find it hard to describe what I'm actually listening to. Which is a good thing I feel, as it always makes for an interesting listening experience when I put the album on. Having male (sometimes growly) and female vocals also brings a different take on things, as the sweeter more melodic vocals of Laura Binder combine with the heavier more earthy ones of Andra Ficzek to draw out what is best in Dalriada's music. Also the combination of so many different instruments makes for one hell of a rollercoaster ride, heavy guitars one minute, accordion and fiddle the next, followed by flutes and lutes all gelling together to make 'Igeret' a unique and special listening experience.

Maybe the reason why I have a ball playing this album (and playing it loud) is that over the years my musical tastes have changed, expanded , grown, whatever you want to call it, and I can with hand on heart say that while this may not be for everyone, Dalriada have put together an interesting powerful folk metal CD that has a quirky charm all of it's own, that many Fireworks & Rocktopia readers will want to hear.
