Title

A decent little independent album with plenty of invention.

Although this is their first internationally it's actually the third album from the Italian band Neversin. Having started out, as many bands do, as a tribute band, they've found their own sound along the way. It's an eclectic mix, sometimes easy to like but difficult to love. Imagine if Green Day decided to add Iron Maiden style guitar runs and a little melodic rock sheen then you'll get an idea of what to expect from Neversin. 'Jail' combines all these elements in one song and mixing classic rock with more modern styles is clearly their game plan.

Lead singer Filippo Benetton's voice is a mix of Billie Joe Armstrong and Manic Street Preacher's James Dean Bradford, with an almost Scandinavian melodic rock sensibility all rolled into one. 'Fairyland' comes across like fellow Italian pop rockers Vanilla Sky with classic rock aspirations. Ballad 'Trust' shows he can sing impressively high, the musicianship lending the tune a progressive feel and potential pop crossover appeal. Then the band pull 'October' out of the bag and give us straight European metal, followed by the rather good modern power ballad of 'Long For Love'. Guitarists Matteo Scalcon and Federico Fabian are happy to try their hand at a variety of pop, rock and metal tones.

The album closes with Deep Purple's 'Highway Star', a song you've probably heard so often it has become part of your DNA and you don't actually listen to it that often these days, and so it's to Neversin's credit that they do a spirited, if faithful, version of the song that helps remind you what a great rock tune it is. It also, slightly unfortunately, shows you that they don't have a song of their own close to that stature (but then few bands do). A decent little independent album with plenty of invention and an interesting and varied live proposition, should you ever be holidaying close to Venice.
