Not as memorable as the debut on first listen, but a solid effort nonetheless.

For those who are unfamiliar with the name, Oliver Weers is a Copenhagen based vocalist who got his first major break when he appeared on the Danish version of pop reality show The X Factor – if you haven't seen it, check out his rendition of the Queen classic 'The Show Must Go On' on the web – and whilst he didn't actually win (then again, not winning never did Chris Daughtry any harm!), it did bring his undoubted vocal talents to the attention of the hard rock world.

His debut album 'Get Ready' (which first emerged back in 2008) featured a sprinkling of big hitters such as Tommy Aldridge and Marco Mendoza, and its songs (largely co-written with producer Soren Andersen of Superfuzz fame) turned quite a few heads with their blend of traditional hard rock melodies and contemporary production. For his sophomore release 'Evil's Back' however, Weers has put together a band he hopes will have much more permanence about it – a couple of highly rated young guitarists with the steadying influence of a more seasoned rhythm section.

Furthermore, this time around Weers' has actively tried to establish a more distinct and cohesive style for himself – pitched somewhere between the traditional hard rock with which he grew up, and the darkly atmospheric, goth infused metal of bands like My Dying Bride, HIM and After Forever. And, whilst it at first seems odd, after a couple of spins it begins to sink in and for the most part, works quite well. The Kelly Clarkson meets Evanescene sound of 'Hero' (featuring a guest appearance from Stella BlackRose chanteuse Rebecca Armstrong) has real MTV potential, and the sinewy riffs of tracks such as 'Without You' or 'Much Too Much' when combined with big hooks, really do start to linger in your subconscious after a while.

Not as memorable as the debut on first listen, but a solid effort nonetheless.
