A release for completists only.

In the movie world the buzzword of the last few years seems to be 're-imagining ', taking a familiar franchise and twisting it into something that's fresh and different, but also reassuringly familiar. Whilst this has occasionally been tried with music – unplugged/acoustic albums spring to mind – Carl Palmer's 'Working Live' series presents instrumental pieces of music previously recorded by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, played live by a traditional power trio with guitarist Paul Bielatowicz (Neal Morse) filling in Keith Emerson's original keyboard parts.

As a big ELP fan I have to say that it all sounds a bit alien to me, as not only do some parts simply not work on guitar, the warts and all recording style doesn't do Bielatowicz any favours and his sound is fairly grating throughout, which is strange as he has a very clean sound when I've seen him playing with Neal Morse. Also, most of the bona fide ELP classics were already covered on volumes 1 and 2, so here you get the likes of 'Peter Gunn', Prokofiev's 'Romeo And Juliet' and Palmer's own 'In A Moroccan Market' alongside the better known 'Pictures At An Exhibition', 'Bitches Crystal' and 'Nutrocker'. Parts of 'Pictures...' actually work quite well and Bielatowicz and bassist Stuart Clayton are both good players, but some of the off-key work on the aforementioned 'Romeo And Juliet' and other bits here and there, should either have been cleaned up and 'doctored' in the studio, or simply recorded in a studio in the first place.

It probably comes as no surprise that Carl Palmer is the outstanding musician here, but there's no way you would dig out these versions and play them in preference to the ELP studio versions (or one of the many live albums for that matter), so this is a release for completists only.
