Fifth solo release by Mike Tramp.

After the re-launch of White Lion in 2006, the band with which he first made his name on a global scale in the eighties, Mike Tramp had seemed to give up on the music business altogether. It was only when a T.V. programme 'All Stars' about his life was broadcast in his native Denmark in 2009 that Tramp found his profile once again re-established, that he returned to a studio to record the 'Rock'n'Roll Circuz' album, his fifth solo release. The ensuing Danish tour was a huge success, which has resulted in the '…Circuz' becoming the name of the band, featuring Mike's long-time collaborator bassist Claus Langeskov, guitarist Soren Andersen and energetic drummer Morten Hellborn, and 'Stand Your Ground' is the second release from this line-up, and it's one of the best albums Mike Tramp has created in his 30-plus years in the business.

While Tramp's most successful period was arguably the initial White Lion period, I personally preferred the Freak Of Nature output, but it's the straight-forward rock'n'roll of his solo material that seems to be where Tramp is most comfortable, featuring the most heartfelt lyrics of his career, where Mike wears his heart on his sleeve and is not afraid to write about his family, his experiences and his personal feelings, while also sharing a sometimes pessimistic view on the state of the world. The '…Circuz' albums are just a touch heavier than his previous solo records, with the guitars cranked right up, and in Soren Andersen Tramp has found the perfect foil for his own rhythm work, there is an abundance of neat guitar interplay throughout this album.

While the previous '…Circuz' album had it's fair share of ballads, 'Stand Your Ground' has just two, the mid-tempo 'Straight From The Look In My Eyes' and the fantastic thought-provoking epic 'The Soldier Never Started A War' that closes the CD. Elsewhere it's a decent mix of great up-tempo rockers like 'Don't Let Them Put It On You', 'Alright By Me', 'Gotta Get Away' and 'Say What You Will', and more atmospheric numbers like 'Wish You Well', the Tesla sounding acoustic/electric 'The World Is Changing', and the commercial 'The Distance', which is a potential hit single, while 'Prettiest Girl' has just a hint of Country in its guitar riff. Incidentally the Danish version of this album will also include 'Hymn To Ronnie,' Tramp's touching, epic tribute to Ronnie James Dio; if downloads are your thing you could do a lot worse than get hold of this song from www.miketramp.dk and add it to the end of the album yourself.
