An album that thoroughly disappoints after such a promising debut.

I really would like one of the major labels to explain their marketing strategy, because it seems completely nonsensical. Take a band that has had success with their debut album as a result of some hits that have done well in pop format and rock format and then on the sophomore effort push them completely into metal territory. The result, melody and hook are sacrificed for bludgeon and a seemingly limitless aural guitar onslaught. Apparently the message form the record labels is "hey guys, you're a rock band make sure that you sound like one". Openly encouraging the bands to go in this direction means drafting in producers more in tune with the more aggressive sub genres of rock music; Rev Theory did it on the appalling 'Justice' album using Deftones producer Terry Date, Black Tide follow suit on the up and coming 'Post Mortem' using Josh Wilbur and Garth Richardson and now it seems fledgling producer Colby Wedgworth wants a piece of the action with Burn Halo.

In an effort to toughen up, 'Up From the Ashes' is afforded the most nauseating drum sound that you are likely to hear this year; the main culprit being the kick drum which simply adds to a synthetic drum machine sound throughout.

It's not all bad though, James Hart's voice is excellent throughout and if you look hard there are some worthy songs to be had. 'Threw it All Away' is an excellent slow tempo power ballad where Hart rally tears it up, the title track is an example of prime time melodic metal and 'Dakota', a slow burning metal romp, is perhaps the albums finest moment. Elsewhere, true album spoilers come in the form of the crass 'I Won't Back Down' which goes into kick drum overdrive and the equally coma inducing 'Shine'.

Average songs coupled with an obsession to join the metal fraternity make for an album that thoroughly disappoints after such a promising debut.
