Progressive metal with Vanden Plas connections.

I would like to start this review by first saying that I really do like the music that Red Circuit perform - which is progressive metal by the way! - but I do have a few problems with what they do as well. The biggest of which is that they sound just like Vanden Plas. Now let me say straight away that I love Vanden Plas, who are one of my favourite bands, but I don’t want another act to sound this much like them. I think that some of the problems stem from the fact that, firstly Markus Teske (who has produced Vanden Plas on many occasions) is both producer and keyboard player with Red Circuit, secondly Vanden Plas vocalist Andy Kuntz sings back up vocals, writes quite a few of the songs and helps with all the vocal arrangements on the album, and thirdly Chiteral ‘Chity’ Somapala (Red Circuit vocalist) who does have a great voice by the way, sounds uncannily like Mr. Kuntz, so much so that the band lose a bit of they’re own identity as you listen to the album.

Which is really a shame because ‘Homeland’ does have a superb set of songs on it, songs that are well played and performed, songs that are every bit as good as those of many of the progressive metal bands who are putting out albums at the moment, and in a lot of cases much better. So I’ll now say that for all my reservations about the band’s individuality (which I’ll put aside for a moment), tracks like ‘The World Of Forgotten Sons’, ‘Through The Eyes Of A Child’, ‘Fall In The Skies’ and ‘You Can Sleep While Your Dead’ are amongst the strongest prog metal songs I’ve heard this year. So please don’t think I’m slagging the band off with what I said earlier, far from it. I just feel that they need a couple of outside writers who Teske hasn’t worked with before, or maybe just one who doesn’t have such an established writing style as Andy Kuntz. If they do this then the wonderful music this band can play will change and make them real contenders, a very good album with, for me, a few problems.
