Title

A heavy, commercial blues rock album with insistent beats and Latino rhythms.

Even though they have a platinum album and scored billboard hits in the USA, I have to admit that I've never come across San Angelo Texas rock outfit Los Lonely Boys before and after spending a couple of weeks with 'Rockpango', I have to say that I'm wondering why. Bringing together the influences of the part of the world that they emanate from, Los Lonely Boys turn out a style of rock music that encompasses the blues, classic rock, the odd vague hint of jazz and a whole host of Latino spirit.

Opening number 'American Idle' (you've gotta love that play on words) is a great bench mark for what this album is about, with a gritty, yet melodic guitar line dancing around an almost tango like beat to create a meld of styles that really shouldn't work, but most definitely do. Now I have to be honest and say that it wasn't an instant hit with me and in fact it took numerous listens for the variety of styles to really take grip on my lugs, but when they did, it meant that I haven't been able to stop playing this album, with songs such as the funky multi-lingual 'Love In My Veins' being another perfect example of how these two musical worlds somehow collide with seductively irresistible results. What also helps matters along is the tremendous vocal work from the three Garza brothers who make up the band, with Henry providing guitars, Jojo bass and Ringo (I kid you not) on drums. With an ability to also throw in some commercially tinged rock, the likes of 'Road To Nowhere' and 'Smile' go a long way to explaining the band's huge crossover appeal. The latter track especially sits somewhere between an Aerosmith ballad and 'Sgt. Pepper's' era Beatles and is easy to imagine sliding out of radios all across America.

Los Lonely boys aren't afraid to rock out either, with 'Believe' coming on like a beefed up Stevie Wonder, while 'Rockpango' is a chugging blues rock workout that leaves you breathless with its constant beat and Stevie Ray Vaughn like guitar licks.

I've got to be honest and say that I don't think that this is going to be an album for everyone, with the variety of styles and influences that Los Lonely Boys gather together maybe just proving a little too left field for some. If however the thought of a heavy, commercial blues rock album with insistent beats and Latino rhythms sounds rather interesting to you, then it's time to do the 'Rockpango'!
