Power metal from the American group.

It’s metal time, Hurrah! Although I am a notorious big softy with my collection of FM, Europe and Chris De Burgh (Hey! He used to rock. A bit…), I’m not adverse to a decent power metal album. Of course, like any other genre power metal is full of average bands that get a few plays and are banished to the back of my collection, but Cage have so far avoided that fate and I was looking forward to hearing this new effort.

You know you’re not dealing with shrinking violets here, as in the centre of the CD booklet is a pic of the band looking moody (with vocalist Sean Peck adopting the classic ‘invisible boob grope’ pose) under the legend ‘AMERICAN POWER METAL KINGS’. Whilst giggling at this I listened to the spoken intro ‘The Power That Feeds’, which sounds like it’s being narrated by the Devil’s small intestine, and the opening track ‘Planet Crusher’. After this, I was under no illusions that Cage might have decided to try their claws at AOR, as it’s rather clear that ‘Science Of Annihilation’ is as metal as you’re likely to get.

The standout is Sean Peck (who squeezes in another invisible boob grope on the back of the booklet - top man!), a man who manages to channel both King Diamond and Rob Halford, yet also hangs onto his own identity. The man has a set of lungs on him that could inflate a Zeppelin, and is perfectly suited to the breakneck metal his bandmates provide. His versatility is showcased during the three part title track, where the slow intro of ‘Spectre Of War’ segues into the mad speed showcase that forms the bulk of the track. It also gives a good platform for guitarists Dave Garcia and Anthony McGinnis, who spend most of the album throwing down monster licks and some seriously fiddly solos.

A nice antidote to European power metal, Cage are nothing less than they claim, and are a must for anyone who owns an air guitar.
