Sixth solo album from the Fleetwood Mac guru.

The sixth solo album from the Fleetwood Mac guru, 'Seeds We Sow' finds the veteran musician in fine form. Keeping a solo career ('the small machine', as he calls it) running alongside Fleetwood Mac ('the big machine'), Lindsey has cemented his position in the music world as a prolific and skilled songwriter. After a fourteen year gap between his popular 'Out Of The Cradle' release in 1992 and the sparser sounds of 'Under the Skin', Buckingham picked up the pace by putting out the impressive 'Gift Of Screws' in 2008. 'Seeds We Sow' offers fans an album that, sonically, sounds to me takes elements from 'Out Of the Cradle' and 'Under The Skin' and blends them together into a satisfying whole. It also marks Buckingham's first album without major label backing from Warners.

The title track includes all the Buckingham trademarks imaginable; it's a pleasant, yet slightly haunting tune which Lindsey gave away on his website - an act which I'm sure whetted the appetites of his fans. When I heard it, and the second track 'In Our Own Time', with its programmed drums and lilting lead vocal, I expected another album like 'Under The Skin', but despite Lindsey handling almost everything himself on the record, there are plenty of more 'band orientated' tunes on offer. A great example of the fuller sound can be found on ‘That's The Way Love Goes’, the only song to feature additional musicians. The verse starts in similar guitar and vocal style, before exploding into one of the catchiest choruses anywhere on the album. 'Rock Away Blind' is an energetic foray, preceding one of my favourites: 'One Take'. This excellent tune starts quietly with Lindsey and his electric guitar this time, before the bass and drums kick in for another great chorus. The particular highlight on this track is the superb pair of guitar solos Buckingham lets rip, the first one tasteful, the second faster and exquisite.

'Gone Too Far' sounds like it could easily be a Fleetwood Mac song and the great ballad 'End Of Time' is also well worth a listen. Lindsey also pays tribute once again to The Rolling Stones, with a cover of 'She Smiled Sweetly', recorded just with voice and guitar. This gentle finale is a wonderful way to close to a classy album.

With its measured use of bass and drums on several tracks, juxtaposed with the one voice/one guitar approach Lindsey favours so much, the album is an excellent blend of all that makes him such a talent. It's also a grower with some kind of grip on me - every time I think I have heard it enough to review it, I keep giving it another spin. And it keeps getting better! I'd put this down as essential for anyone who has enjoyed Lindsey's solo work before, and a great starting point if you've ever been tempted to try the songs from the small machine out.
