DEFYING GRAVITY has been called “Grey’s Anatomy in space” by critics in the USA. Though the series was cancelled in the autumn of 2009, BBC producers had already acquired the UK rights and began showing it just before Christmas. It’s not very good. The opening episode showed promise but it’s too juvenile and poorly written to appeal to serious sci-fi fans who are not really bothered about which astronaut has a crush on some other astronaut and what their love lives were like prior to going in to space. It’s a shame, because the overall premise about eight astronauts on a mission to Mars whose daily lives onboard the ship are being recorded and broadcast back to earth as part of a documentary is intriguing.
