A pretty decent first effort.

Holy Force is the latest supergroup project to appear, founded by Taiwanese guitarist Ango Chen, most noted for his work with Mike Vescera (Yngwie Malmsteen, Loudness).Vocals are supplied by Mark Boals (Malmsteen, Royal Hunt, Seven The Hardway), and the rhythm section consists of Symphony X bassist Mike LePond and ex-Manowar drummer Kenny ‘Rhino’ Earl.Due to most of the band being involved in progressive orientated bands in the past, I expected this debut release to follow a similar path, but the Holy Force sound is more of a combination of traditional eighties style heavy metal and power metal, with the occasional hint of neo-classicism thrown in for good measure.

As you would expect from the calibre of musicians involved, the performances are top-drawer, and though there are plenty of keyboards (no explanation of who plays them), naturally it’s the guitar that dominates the proceedings with an abundance of shredding solos that occasionally have an eastern influence: possibly a reference to Ango Chen’s Taiwanese heritage.Mark Boals makes full use of his impressive vocal range at every opportunity, at times sounding like Ronnie James Dio, then soaring all the way up to soprano level, and Mike LePond and Rhino have forged a solid partnership that really drives the rhythms along.

The songs are largely up-tempo and energetic, and full of melody. There are three short instrumental pieces that seem a bit pointless - they would have been better used as intro pieces to lead into the songs - but the full songs are well worth investigating, including the title track, the commercial ‘Moonlight Fantasy’, the distinctly Iron Maiden sounding ‘Flying’ and the pounding ‘A Country Good Or Bad’ which all hit the spot perfectly.Occasionally the neo-classical keyboard flourishes usher in a strong whiff of cheese, but for the most part it’s a pretty decent first effort.
