Title

I think I’ve just found my album of the year.

Crimes Of Passion’s self-titled debut album appeared back in 2008, and was a hefty dose of working class metal shot through with a liberal dose of punk aggression.A change in personnel has seen the band expand to now include two guitarists, resulting in them drastically upping their game and shifting direction towards a contemporary, heavier, dynamic metal style, best described as Iron Maiden meets Avenged Sevenfold, but still accommodating an abundance of melody.

The main impetus behind the new approach is the excellent guitar work of the two new guys Charles Staton and Harry Griffiths.I was a big fan of original guitarist Andy Lindsay as I loved his unique style, and it was his fiery riffs and solos that made the debut album so special to me.But it’s the transition from one to two guitars that has enabled Crimes Of Passion to richly cultivate the structures of the songs, and the results are stunning. The stakes have been raised performance-wise too, the scything riffs dominate proceedings throughout, but also the guitarists are unafraid to try new things, for instance some of the solos go off at unexpected tangents, but still work perfectly well within the confines of the songs. The powerhouse drumming of Kev Tonge is the engine that drives the songs along, and coupled with the aggressive playing style of bassist Simon Fearns culminates in an extraordinarily tight rhythm section.Vocalist Dale Radcliffe has come of age too, he still has the metal edge on the heavier tracks, but has also found a softer side to his voice that’s used to great effect on the more melodic parts of the songs.

There’s a good mix of styles, from the robustly heavy ‘Let The Punishment Fit The Crime’, ‘Dare You To Try’, ‘Sacrifice, No Questions Why’ and ‘Hell And Back’, to the melodic metal of the likes of ‘Blackened Heart’, ‘Body And Soul’ and the up-tempo ‘Dream Again’, and as for the power ballads, ‘Love Is To Die For’ and the epic ‘Blown Away’ are embellished with subtle string textures and masterfully overblown arrangements. But the best thing about this new album are the melodies, even the heavier tracks are exceedingly rich in melody, with some highly addictive choruses.Such an industrious new set of songs needed a high quality production, and the band employed the much sought after Charlie Bauerfiend (Hammerfall, Helloween) to oversee proceedings, naturally with sterling results, and there are also guest vocal appearances from Saxon’s Biff Byford and Helloween’s Andi Deris.

I’ve been championing the cause of Crimes Of Passion for quite some time now, and with ‘To Die For’ they have the album that will truly make people sit up and take notice, and should finally reap them the rewards they deserve. If an adrenaline shot could come in the form of music then this would be it.I think I’ve just found my album of the year.
