A real pleasure from beginning to end.

Arachnes is an Italian progressive metal band formed around 1995 by two brothers Enzo (vocals) and Frank (guitars) Caruso. The band started out life as Firehouse who were more of a hard rock band than a prog one, until the brothers decided to try a new musical concept and Arachnes was born. Taking their influences from far and wide range across musical genres, including such diversity as Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Zeppelin and Bartok the band honed their new sound and in 1997 released their debut album ‘The Goddess Temple’. Quickly onto 2011 and ‘A New Day’, and now this, my first encounter with this band and its music. Because of where they are from I was initially expecting an album that sounded a lot like Rhapsody. Instead what I heard was a group of musicians who have an interesting take on melodic prog metal, and whose CD features some excellent songs, a stellar production and wonderful performances.

These performances can best be heard on songs like the hard hitting ‘I’m Sorry’ a keyboard and guitar powerhouse of a song or the intoxicating ‘Into The Fog’ which blends beautiful guitar arrangements with some emotional vocals and a great hookline; it does not end there, however, and other gems soon follow. ‘Take Your Life’ has a forceful guitar riff that is the foundation to a song that builds layer upon layer until it reaches its towering finish, and ‘Your Death’ which is a complex track, and brought to mind Symphony X at their best. It’s an instrumental track which again has some superb guitar work from Frank, coupled with soaring keyboard runs and an awesome rhythm section, and is easily the best cut on the album, by a country mile.

This might be my first Arachnes CD (they have recorded six others) but on this showing I know that I have been missing out on some wonderful music from a very, very good band: so it won’t be my last! Melodic prog metal when done well is always a pleasure to listen to, and ‘A New Day’ was a real pleasure from beginning to end.
