Emphatic - 'Damage' Hot

Should immediately be added to any self-respecting modern rock fan's collection.

Nebraska's Emphatic seem in essence to typify mainstream modern rock; lower register vocals, down-tuned guitar riffs, tub thumping drums and the almost obligatory hooks. Indeed Emphatic display all the traits of the truly great modern rock bands on one single record.

Picked up by Atlantic when they were more of an alternative metal act, Emphatic are the spiteful love child of Nickelback and Disturbed. Co-managed by songwriter and producer extraordinaire Jeff Blue the band were paired up with Howard Benson who has quite superbly rounded of the rough edges and turned the band into an outstanding commercial rock act with a massive future. The band aren’t without their troubles; shortly after signing to Atlantic after a showcase event, several band members were kicked out of the band by the label and more recently vocalist Patrick Wilson has pulled out of the band’s live concerts due to a vocal chord problem, being replaced by Grant Kendrick from The Wreckage. It’s a great shame that the band appear to be somewhat jinxed as they have already had some success with the banal yet catchy first single ‘Bounce’ which has been getting plenty of airplay.

The album although a little short at thirty five minutes is sheer quality, from the crunching opener ‘Do I’ through to the southern tinged excellence of ‘Pride’ or the lighter waving ballad ‘Tonight’. The lyrics would give the misogynistic Nickelback or Theory of a Deadman a run for their money on ‘Beg’ where Wilson pleads “I love it when you need me….right between the legs!” or on the self-explanatory and equally sexist ‘Bounce’. Of the heavier material the addictive yet hooky ‘Original Sin’ stands out as does the bonus track ‘What Are You Afraid Of’ which really should have made the album proper; it’s that good. Emphatic chose to forget their past on ‘Damaged’ and therefore old staples such as ‘Hell To Pay’ and ‘Goodbye Girl’ are forgotten in favour of more dynamic and effortlessly memorable new material.

More streamlined, more switched on and with more great songs than you can shake a stick at 'Damage' should immediately be added to any self-respecting modern rock fan’s collection.

This review is a joke. This album (and band for that matter) is as entirely forgettable as they are unoriginal. They only add to the bloated lineup of bubblegum pop metal that's choked the airwaves for the last 10 years. The song writing is garbage. The music is the same 3 or four chord progressions over and over. The style is completely contrived. I wouldn't waste my time even if the album was free.
