Okay in small doses, but 61 minutes of this is too much for me.

Yet another "supergroup" of sorts, 9 Chambers profess to be 'Real rock from noisy veterans'. Featuring Alice Cooper collaborator Greg Hampton on lead vocals and guitars, Monster Magnet's Ed Mundell on guitars, Jorgen Carlsson of Guv't Mule on bass and Black Sabbath/Heaven And Hell star Vinny Appice on drums, the pedigree is impressive. The plaudits on the press release are strong, claiming the band is heavy and organic, featuring no autotune, no BS, just 70's influenced hard, stoner rock. It also claims the band is reminiscent of early Deep Purple or Montrose - or even a modern version of Black Sabbath. I think they're half right.

First off, 9 Chambers certainly rock and are certainly noisy. The production is thumping and bass heavy, with Greg Hampton delivering vocals which alternate between solid hard rock singing and just plain shouting. The album opens with 'Life Moves On' and in all fairness, it's pretty good. It's not the most melodic track you'll ever hear, but it is memorable and a good choice to open the album. 'Majick Number' follows with a heavier groove, underpinned by a real growling bass line - then we are hit by the chorus which features some of Hampton's afore-mentioned shouting. 'One Thing Missing' and 'Know Your Enemy' come and go without much to show for it, before the truly horrible 'What's It Gonna Get U' which features one of the worst riffs I've ever heard. The rest of the song sounds much like the five before it with more shouting in the chorus.

And therein lies the problem - I quite liked the first track, but the other thirteen (fourteen if you get the bonus track) all are the same sort of pace and style, with the exception of the more dreamy 'Can't Turn Your Back' and groovy 'Use U Up'. This makes the album much of a muchness and I found it became a bit of an endurance test to make it through to the end. I can't fault the playing or the style the band have embraced, but the songs just don't resonate with me. Do I hear any Purple on this CD? Nothing at all: apart from maybe the intensity of 'In Rock', without the genius. There's certainly no Montrose in here to my ears, and while 9 Chambers are without a doubt heavy like Black Sabbath, the closest they get to being Sabbath is they have Appice on the drum stool.

If you like relentless heavy rock, and it is heavy without being metal, then you might get a kick out of it, but I think Tracer do this sort of thing better. 9 Chambers is okay in small doses, but 61 minutes of this is too much for me, I'm afraid.
