An impressive set of Blues Rock that impresses with its power.

With Joe Bonamassa not only bringing heavy blues guitar music to a wider audience, but making it a cool genre to be involved with again, there suddenly appears to be a whole host of axe-slingers following in his wake. To be fair to Chris Duarte though, his star has long been on the rise and with Bonamassa seemingly moving more and more into rock territory, maybe the time is right for someone like him to begin to receive wider acclaim.

'Blues In The Afterburner' is Duarte's 11th release and an album which covers the full gamut of what makes a gritty, hard hitting blues album, although there is also plenty of subtlety to be found. With a sniff of ZZ Top and a strong whiff of Stevie Ray Vaughn, 'BitA' is a jam heavy and at times loose affair that still keeps a sharp focus on hammering home some extensive guitar workouts, although not at the expense of a catchy chorus, or a lethal, if unpolished hook. Not content with being a guitar player of the highest calibre, Duarte also has the sort of bourbon soaked voice that sits perfectly with this muscular, if authentic blues style.

Only one song on the album isn't written by Duarte himself, which is the spellbinding 'Hold Back The Tears' by Toshihiro Sumitomo and Monji Kadowaki of Japanese Southern Rock band Savoy Truffle (yes you read that right!) and while Japan isn't exactly famed for its blues, it does have to be said that Duarte's interpretation of their song is amongst the best on the album.

A little rougher around the edges than the likes of Bonamassa or Jeff Healey, Chris Duarte has served up an impressive set of Blues Rock that impresses with its power, while completely convincing with its authenticity.
