A band reminiscent of the tidal wave of MTV friendly metal acts.

Knowing the square-rot of sod-all about Motherlode, and always liking to play review albums blind for the first couple of spins, early impressions were of a band reminiscent of the tidal wave of MTV friendly acts that flooded the metal scene in the later Eighties like Sweet FA USA, Roxy Blue, Roxx Gang etc etc -- all good in their own way but all highly generic and rather faceless. So it came as no real surprise to find out that the Swedish quintet originally came together in 1982, although given that this is just their second album and that they've spent the best part of thirty years MIA, their biog's claim to have "held the metal flag high throughout three decades" is a tad fanciful.

In their wilderness years Messrs Larsson, Nilsson, Evertsson and Beckmann (together with new drummer Pär Hjulström) have missed the point that metal has moved on since their 1986 debut 'The Sanctuary'; Motherlode sound so rooted in the Eighties that they're pretty much pot bound, and if you prefer things a bit more sparky a preponderance of lighters-in-the-air power ballads does weigh heavily on the album's running time. That said, when the guys do break free of their somnambulistic straitjacket songs like 'Crawling Through The Desert' and the title cut do deliver a pretty hefty punch.

There are also elements of Glenn Hughes' groove in songs like 'Wild Dog' and 'Bring Me Down', bolstered by Sonny Larsson's occasional Cannock-boy delivery. And just when you think it can't get any Hughsier, the album plays out with 'You' which certainly shares some DNA with Deep Purple's 'You Keep On Moving'. Derivative they may be, but their (metal) hearts are in the right place and they get a bonus point for the exceptionally odd 'Ice Cream Man'. I would imagine that the majority of Fireworks' and Rocktopia's readers should lap this up and, given the band's style and swish, Motherlode wouldn't be at all out of place at Firefest one day. Something to ponder on...
