Dirty Passion will delight anyone hankering after a retro fix of hooky, high-volume proportions.

In a genre that's notoriously big on style but sparse in substance, these Swedish glamsters are a painstaking rarity, having nurtured their now-expert musicianship over the course of the past half-decade. But as an unmistakable product of today's deeply derivative eighties revival scene, this nostalgic retread is riddled with the symptoms of a band still some distance off discovering their own sound.

Born out of these catchy but generically narrow sonic boundaries, Dirty Passion's first studio move is an unsurprisingly formulaic one shaped in the image of such legends as AC/DC and Mötley Crüe. Laden with harmony-rich choruses, dazzling solos and swaggering hooks, 'Different Tomorrow' is something of a glam rock by numbers affair, with numerous tracks displaying a highly predictable formula that shows little variation in tone and song structure. And despite often falling short of the five-minute mark, Dirty Passion's most clichéd offerings also feature a sizeable portion of filler in the form of repetitive melody lines and vocal hooks.

However, the originality and raw feeling of epic standout 'A Trip To Paradise' goes some way to revealing the band's true potential as unique players in their own energetic and fiercely infectious right. Opening on a delicate tangle of distorted notes, its altogether moodier flavour adds some much-needed, smouldering depth to mix. And while '...Paradise's' rogue smattering of bongos may be a questionable addition, the riffs with which it is crammed are refreshingly free from showy glitz and pleasingly abuzz with gritty, ultra-heavy distortion. With a slick, soaring range that positively oozes effortless cool, frontman Emil Ekbladh leads this guitar-driven assault with expertise and star quality in spades.

From the Skid Row-esque harmonies and epic riffs of title track 'Different Tomorrow' to 'Rockin' In The Night's' show-stopping solos, Dirty Passion's evidently encyclopaedic knowledge of hard rock makes for unoriginal but wildly contagious listening. Still a mere album into their career thus far, there's obvious promise here and therefore plenty of room for improvement. But for now, Dirty Passion will doubtless delight anyone hankering after a retro fix of hooky, high-volume proportions.
