Songs of the highest calibre filled with clever guitar solos, big riffs and powerful vocals.

Boguslaw Balcerak is another new name for me to contend with! He hails from Warsaw, where he took up the guitar at the age of 16, and devoted himself to rock music. Playing in a few local bands growing up Boguslaw felt frustrated at not being able to find either the right musicians or singer to help get his music to a wider audience. So he decided to record his own album 'Blood Of The Prophets', then later on to try and find a singer to complete the recordings. After the musical side of the album was completed and obviously being a somewhat cheeky chappy, he wrote to three of his favourite vocalists and asked if they would care to perform on his CD, they agreed and thus you can hear Mark Boals, Carsten 'Lizard' Shultz and Goran Edman giving their all on this new release.

As I think you might expect with the inclusion of these three vocalists and a love of Rainbow, Mozart and Bach, 'BBC-BOTP' sounds a lot like early Malmsteen and having a couple of his old singers on board only makes this connection stronger. This isn't a band thing though as the songs are of the highest calibre and are filled with clever guitar solos, big riffs and powerful vocals. 'The Bard's Tale' is a prime example of what I'm talking about, Mark Boals is on top form and the keyboards battle with the guitars of Boguslaw until he is left standing triumphant. Title track 'Blood Of The Prophets', is a guitar heavy track with an odd time signature but it works well when Carsten Shultz takes control of the melody, 'Grave Of Love' is a lot like something taken off Yngwie's 'Odyssey' album mainly because Goran Edman handles the vocal duties on this track, the guitars also are more hard rock than neo-classical and the whole song has a more pop edge than anything else on the album.

Towards the end of the album, things change as the songs take on a whole different timbre, the riffs are heavier than before, the keyboards and vocals are also darker and the guitar work of Boguslaw himself is more intense and dramatic. And as these later songs like 'Angel Of Divine' or 'Valley of the Dead' play, you feel your almost listening to a different band and I'm not sure why but I like the lighter, less heavy approach that begins this album. Why Boguslaw decided to have an album of two halves isn't apparent but it makes it an odd proposition to listen to and yet at times still a compelling one.

As neo-classical records go 'Blood Of The Prophets' is very good, it just perhaps, needed a different sequencing of the tracks, instead of the light stuff first then the heavy, darker stuff to finish. With a more balanced track listing, I think this could have been a fantastic album, instead of just a good one.
