Solid and well-played album that has a lot of strong moments on it.

This is the third album from Finnish melodic rockers Human Temple. Their first two albums were both critically acclaimed, and were said to be full of catchy and intelligent pieces of melodic rock. Yet this third release sees the band take a slight departure from the more melodic hard rocking music of their previous two albums. Why change what was I think a winning formula isn’t clear and yet, in truth, the new direction of the band’s music hasn’t hurt really them, and by beefing up the guitars and giving them a more metallic aspect, actually seems to have done Human Temple a world of good.

Opener ‘I Will Follow’ is a prime example of what I mean, starting off with a metallic guitar riff, which segues into an almost pomptastic middle section that has lots of clever keyboard runs courtesy of Jori Tojander, before once again slowing and changing to a softer AOR style that ends the song. This isn’t the track I would have chosen to begin the album with because its many different styles make for a demanding listen and the track, as good as it is, might have worked much better placed in the middle of the CD, rather than at the start.

Happily from here on in the classy melodic metal that this band play, really kicks in and songs like ‘Bleeding Through’ a mid -paced rocker with a great chorus, ‘Our World Our Time’ where the band use a lot of acoustic guitars to great effect, the pacey ‘Almost There’ where new guitarist Risto Tuominene plays up a storm and ‘Some Things Are Never Long Time Ago’ which reminded me of Brother Firetribe and features Nightwish’s Emmpu Vuorinen on guitar, all demonstrate that Human Temple are a band that have the tools to make it in their chosen musical niche.

I must mention that I’ve never been that big a fan of cover songs; I’ve never really seen the point of covering other people’s music when the original is 99 times out of 100 always better than the re-hash. That said I really enjoyed Human Temple’s take on the Fleetwood Mac pop rocker ‘Little Lies’, the band’s heavier, grittier delivery really works because the much less polished way they play the song, struck a chord with me I also loved the shouty metal vocals that they use on the chorus (genius)!

All in all another solid and well-played album that has a lot of strong moments on it, proving that Human Temple is fast becoming a band that you should keep your eye on…and another winner for Escape Music.
