It's great to see an official release with excellent sound quality.

Originally released in 1973, ‘Piano Man’ was Joel’s first album on Columbia Records although his debut ‘Cold Spring Harbour’ came out two years previously on the tiny label, Family Productions. Joel was distraught when his debut was released: there was an error with the mastering which caused his vocals to sound high-pitched, like a chipmunk. It sent the singer-songwriter into depression. However, ‘Piano Man’ is a fine album and has stood the test of time. It wasn’t his breakthrough album; that would be 1977’s masterful ‘The Stranger’ which would rocket the piano man into the Top 5 album charts in the USA. Although he’s hardly known for it in this country, Joel’s lyrics were just as profound, astute and heartfelt as his Columbia label buddy Bruce Springsteen and any album pre ‘An Innocent Man’ (1983) will prove that.

‘Piano Man’ got Joel some good reviews, radio play and okay sales but it wasn’t a huge hit. This deluxe edition is an excellent purchase for fans and makes a welcome companion piece to the must-have reissue of ‘The Stranger’ from a couple of years ago. ‘Travelin’ Player’ is a strong way to open the album while the title track speaks for itself. It’s an enduring song and although Joel doesn’t play it at every show it’s a song he’s never going to get away from given the fact that he plays the piano. ‘Captain Jack’ is one of his all time masterpieces with some memorable lines while ‘You’re My Home’ is a wonderful little ballad with an exceptional melody. ‘The Ballad Of Billy The Kid’ is an inventive song even if Joel admits his geography was way off having never travelled out of New York when he wrote it. Remastered, ‘Piano Man’ has endured even after all these years.

So often bonus discs are just not worth the money but not this time: the second disc in this set features a full performance recorded at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studio on April 15, 1972. Joel would later struggle with fame and let his addictions over take him but this concert shows in top form and with an excellent rapport with the audience. He’s funny and charming and his band are great. The setlist includes ‘Rosalinda’ which was written for his mother, a great version of ‘Everybody Loves You Now’ from his debut and the ballad ‘She’s Got A Way.’ The gig has been bootlegged over the years and most serious Joel collectors already have it but it’s great to see an official release with excellent sound quality. Joel remains one of America’s greatest musical heroes and a personal favourite of this particular Fireworks writer.
