Title

U.F.O. continue the legacy that began some forty-plus years ago.

Along with fellow British Rock Legends Deep Purple, Judas Priest and Saxon, U.F.O. have enjoyed a successful career spanning four decades, managing to ingratiate their way into the hearts of Rock fans the world over, while also inspiring a plethora of young bands along the way. Sure, there have been trials and tribulations en route, but they have always emerged with their heads held high and pride intact. The late seventies saw U.F.O. at their most creative and successful, culminating in arguably the all-time greatest live album in ‘Strangers In The Night,’ then a succession of line-up changes saw the band stutter through the eighties and early nineties, disbanding then reforming twice, but still managing to achieve the odd hit album.

In 1995 the late seventies line-up reformed once again and released the ‘Walk On Water’ album, but following the ‘Covenant’ and ‘Sharks’ albums, guitarist Michael Schenker would leave the band again. American hotshot guitarist Vinnie Moore was recruited in 2004, and U.F.O. would soldier on with their most stable line-up for many years, until bassist Pete Way left in 2009 due to medical reasons, leaving vocalist Phil Mogg and drummer Andy Parker as the sole remaining originals, as keyboardist / guitarist Paul Raymond didn’t join until 1976. 2009’s ‘The Visitor’ was regarded as the best release to bear the name in some time, and also saw the band return to the album charts for the first time in fifteen years.

Now in 2012, U.F.O. release their milestone twentieth studio album ‘Seven Deadly’, and pleasingly it lives up to all the expectations. Driven along by the shimmering solos and riffs of Vinnie Moore, and coupled with the incomparable vocals and occasionally eccentric lyrics of Phil Mogg, it’s everything that any U.F.O. fan could wish for. For sure, this collection of songs is never going to challenge the output of the band in their seventies heyday, and few would (or should) expect them to, but for a bunch of guys supposedly approaching the twilight of their careers, it’s a damn fine attempt. Whether it’s the riff-orientated rock of ‘Fight Night’, ‘Wonderland’ and ‘Mojo Town,’ or the melody of ‘The Last Stone Rider’ and the loosely autobiographical ‘Year Of The Gun’, or the blues-soaked ‘Steal Yourself’ and ‘The Fear’, or indeed the semi-balladry of the epic ‘Angel Station’, ‘Burn Your House Down’ and the quite wonderful ‘Waving Goodbye’, it sees U.F.O. continuing the legacy that began some forty-plus years ago. And long may it continue.
