Another impressive new band from Scandinavia.

For the subject matter of their second album, Norwegian retro-proggers D’Accord have gone deep into ancient times to tell the tale of the lost Greek city of Helike. Back in 373 BC the city sunk, Atlantis-style, into the sea and legend tells that the inhabitants had incurred the wrath of Poseidon. The image of the God of the Sea graces the cover of the CD whilst around him the city descends into the abyss. D’Accord is largely the work of songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Maage who has set out to recapture the spirit and charm of the progressive behemoths of the past, notably King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant and Focus. With the album clocking in at a little over forty minutes this all adds to the 1970’s flavour and in true ‘Thick As A Brick’ style there are only two tracks – ‘Helike Part 1’ and ‘Helike Part 2’ - which would have made for a perfect fit across two sides of vinyl.

Without the break in tracks and variance in titles D’Accord had to ensure there was enough happening to sustain the listeners attention and this is achieved through a combination of lush melodies, forceful vocals and bombastic solos that place their sound at the heavier end of the vintage prog style that they lovingly and accurately recreate. Maage’s vocals are perhaps the most difficult element to overcome and at times sound jarringly out of place when set against the backdrop of keyboard flourishes, flute solos and guitar passages but there are occasions when they perfectly suit the mood and this is something that can be improved upon across future releases.

There are so many impressive new bands that have come out of Scandinavia in recent years and D’Accord is yet another that can be added to the list. If this was forty years ago they would undoubtedly be out touring ‘Helike’ as a bells and whistles live presentation to much acclaim across Europe and North America. As it is there is still much to admire about the band as a studio entity that shows them as both an ambitious and intriguing proposition.
