Title

A gutsy and powerful record.

Prime movers in a new generation of glam/sleaze infused hard rock acts that seem to have miraculously sprung up throughout Scandinavia over these last few years, cocksure Swede’s Crazy Lixx made their intentions abundantly clear from the outset with debut ‘Loud Minority’ back in 2007. Cut from the same belligerently anti establishment cloth as bands such as Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crue and Skid Row, their oh so addictive line in youthful exuberance and razor-sharp riffs provided a much needed shot in the arm to a scene in danger of becoming bogged down in an increasingly cloying power metal quagmire.

A couple of years further down the line and a seemingly altogether more sophisticated version of Crazy Lixx emerged with sophomore set ‘New Religion’; their antsy, rebellious streak cunningly tempered with a new set of influences that now seemed to encompass the likes of Def Leppard, Tesla, Cinderella and Dokken. And, as we march onwards into the second quarter of 2012, upcoming third album ‘Riot Avenue’ promises yet another progression for the band ... or does it?

Firstly, they seem no nearer to resolving the ongoing personnel problems that have dogged their progress since day one – currently a three piece, only vocalist Danny Rexon remains from the early days (although they have added second guitarist Edd Liam to bolster that of Andy Dawson) – and secondly on first listen ‘Riot Avenue’ seems more like the debut than it does ‘New Religion’. However, by the third spin I’d worked out why ... it’s all down to the production values. Leaner, meaner and heavier than anything they’ve done before, this is probably the first time they’ve managed to authentically capture the Crazy Lixx sound as they see it.

Once you figure that out it all starts to slot neatly into place and rabble rousing anthems like ‘In The Night’, ‘Whiskey Tango Foxtrot’ (very Leppard like) and ‘Church Of Rock’ start to make absolute sense. Primal and intoxicating, these songs were crafted first and foremost for the stage, and my guess is that they’ll absolutely slay live when the band head out later this year. Even slower numbers such as moody slow burner ‘Only The Devil’ which closes the album on a particularly poignant high for me are designed to unify an audience – close your eyes and you can just see a sea of mesmerised faces swaying in union, lighters held aloft to magnify the ambience!

A gutsy and powerful record that retains just the right amount of songwriting sophistication to appeal right across the board, ‘Riot Avenue’ is, to these ears at least, the new standard that all would be glam/sleaze upstarts should aspire to ... party on dudes!
