If you like thoughtful indie, then Exit 451 are a polished outfit worth a listen.

This is the debut from Canadian band Exit 451, but the members have been working together in some form or another since the early 90s, including the cult underground band Imaginary Steps. Essentially, this is indie rock, and its influences tend to be from this side of the pond. There’s a distinct trace of The Cure’s Robert Smith about JP Alepins’ vocals on the likes of ‘Where The Sea Meets The Sky’ and ‘The One’. At other times he comes across a little like Blur’s Damien Albarn on ‘Face Of Maya’, ‘War Tale’ and ‘Lord Dunvaig’, compounded by a slight art-school feel to the music. Add to that the central role of the Coldplay style keyboards, Depeche Mode atmospherics and the odd nod to Bowie, it’s prime fodder for NME. If you think that magazine should be pronounced “enemy”, then you’ll want to give this a wide berth, but if you like indie then this is a good album. The band is more than the sum of their influences as they put their own transatlantic slant on it which could attract admirers.

The fact that producer Mark Howard has worked with Daniel Lanois (U2) is very evident as the music has a widescreen, atmospheric feel. The music, reliant on stark piano and electric keyboards means there’s plenty of space on the record, and you can hear every nuance of every note. Although there’s a trippy ambient vibe to the music, it still manages to sound organic, like a band. This is due to Howard’s approach of recording the band on the first or second take, which captures a spontaneity in the performances here. Alepins’ high pitched vocals fit the sparse backing, and there’s some lyrical depth to the songs. There’s a reggae rhythm, a funky groove and keys on ‘The One’, and an ethereal feel to ‘Somewhere in the Ocean’ where Alepins delivers a spoken lyric over piano. These ideas help prevent the record becoming repetitive which could have easily happened considering the minimalist approach.

The record label has done a good job with the packaging, and should encourage people to seek out the hard copy over a digital download. Canada is not renowned for edgy music, and this isn’t going to buck that trend but if you like thoughtful indie, with a Stateside stamp, then Exit 451 are a polished outfit worth a listen.
